Safety equipment grant

VIENNA — The Federal Aviation Administration has granted the Western Reserve Port Authority and Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport $900,000 for safety equipment, guidance signs and other safety-related work. Among the work is raising the height of the wildlife perimeter fence from 8 to 10 feet. The award was announced by the office U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17.

Drug buy turns bad

YOUNGSTOWN — An 18-year-old Struthers man told police he was robbed at gunpoint when he came to Youngstown to buy some marijuana. The man told police he was about to close the deal around 10:40 p.m. Sunday at Market Street and Delason Avenue when a man he knows only as “Bruce” put a shotgun to his head and demanded his cell phone and his wallet. The man said he handed them over, as well as some CDs in a CD book, and Bruce, who is also from Struthers, then told him to leave. The wallet contained $135 in cash, the man told police.

Severe electrical burns

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said the injuries suffered by a Salt Springs Road man were consistent with electrical burns, not burns caused by a flammable substance. Paul N. Furgas, 44, came to the police station on West Boardman Street around 1:30 p.m. Sunday and reported he had been assaulted by two men who poured something hot on him. Furgas was in critical condition Monday in the Akron Burn Center, and officers were unable to speak with him. However, police said their investigation indicates that Furgas was injured in a fenced-in Ohio Edison power station off North Phelps Street. Police found a downed power line. There was no indication that an accelerant was used to burn Furgas, police said.

Police try to ID victim

YOUNGSTOWN — Police Monday were trying to figure out the identity of a man seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Jacobs Road Sunday. The victim was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Monday, and police were unable to interview him. It appeared he ran his motorcycle off the road and into a ditch around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, police said. The man wasn’t carrying any identification. Police said they were able to trace the owner of the motorcycle through its registration but weren’t able to confirm if it was the man injured in the accident.

Water boil advisory

COLUMBIANA — The city on Wednesday will turn off water service along Pittsburgh Street from South Elm Street to Duquesne Street for hydrant work. When water service is restored, a boil advisory will be in effect until tests show the water is safe.

Beatitude House grants

YOUNGSTOWN — Beatitude House, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters to help disadvantaged women and children, recently received $37,900 in grants. The Raymond John Wean Foundation gave $30,000 to The Potter’s Wheel, an education and career preparation program offered by Beatitude House. It also received $4,900 from the Ruth H. Beech Charitable Trust with funds earmarked for window replacement at Beatitude House transitional housing on Fifth Avenue. Charter One Foundation donated $3,000 toward the transitional housing program. Beatitude House, a nonprofit organization, provides two-year housing for homeless women and their children and permanent supportive housing for women with disabilities or with children with disabilities.
