Benefit golf scramble
set at Lakeside

LAKE MILTON — Lakeside Golf Course will host The John & Mary Gura Memorial Golf Outing on July 29 at 8 a.m. Proceeds will support a scholarship fund for Jackson-Milton and Western Reserve high school students who excel in academics and athletics.

Golfers will play a four-person scramble, compete for cash and other prizes, and enjoy lunch and a steak dinner.

A hole-in-one contest will be held featuring a 2007 Chevy Cobalt, vacation package and other prizes. Limited tickets are available and can be purchased at Lakeside Golf Course. Tickets are $65 per golfer. Only amateur golfers can participate in the outing.

The outing and scholarship fund honors the late John & Mary Gura who purchased Lakeside Golf Course in 1957. For 50 years, the course has been operated by family members.

Pepperney to be
inducted into hall

CANFIELD — Jim Pepperney of Canfield will be inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Officials’ Hall of Fame later this month in Columbus.

Pepperney is the first area volleyball official to be chosen.

He has been a volleyball official for the past 30 years and has officiated sectional tournaments 28 years, district tournaments 27 years, regional tournaments 27 years and the state tournament for 26 consecutive years.

He is a charter member of the Mahoning Valley Volleyball Official’s Association and is currently Secretary⁄Treasurer, a position he has held for the past 29 years.

He is a retired OWE Coordinator at Jackson-Milton School District where he is a former basketball and baseball coach and athletic director.

CANFIELD — Canfield High sophomore Dustin Brode has qualified in two events for the national Junior Olympics that will be in Walnut, Calif., from July 24-29. His first name was spelled incorrectly in Sunday’s edition.

Andrew Santor wins

RAVENNA — Mill Creek Golf Course professional Andrew Santor won the Northern Ohio PGA Callaway⁄Pepsi Stroke play event Monday at Windmill Lakes Golf Course.

Santor fired a 3-under-par 67 to win $1,200 top prize. Jon Jones finished second with a 69, while Jonah Karzmer tied for 11th shooting 73.

Trio to compete
in Optimist meet

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Joe Santisi of Boardman will compete in the boys 16-18 year old division, Boo Timko of Girard in the 14-15 division and Ariel Witmer of North Lima in the girls 16-18 division at the Optimist International Junior Golf tournament Saturday through Monday at the PGA National Resort & Spa.

Timko wins event

CHARDON — Boo Timko of Girard, competing in the 15-under division took first place as he fired 36-35—71 in the Junior Invitational golf tournament at the Sand Ridge Country Club course.

Garrett Rodgers of Cambridge Spring, Pa. and Austin Romeo of Erie, Pa. were second and third respectively with 73s.

Beaverrun Race Track

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Bill Pintaric, Jr. of Liberty; David Pintaric and Ahsen Yekin of Canfield each won at the Sports Car Club of America races at the Beaverun Race Track.

Bill Pintaric won for the second time this season in the GT Lite class driving a Nissan 200sx.

David Pintaric won in the Touring One-class driving a Dodge Viper and Yekin won the Formula Atlantic class driving a swift.

Atahan Koymen of Youngstown finished third in the Formula Atlantic.

Thunder to host
youth football camp

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder have scheduled their first-ever Thunder Youth Football Camp, to be held on Cortland Banks Field at the Chevrolet Centre.

The two-day camp will take place July 23-24 from 9 a.m. until noon.

The camp is open to children ages 7-14 and will give them an opportunity to learn valuable football instruction from the Thunder players and coaches.
