Assault at store lands man in jail

BOARDMAN — A Newton Falls man faces assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct charges after a scuffle in the checkout of a Doral Drive grocery store.

William Amatore, 52, was arrested Sunday afternoon after the altercation at Giant Eagle. He remains in the Mahoning County Jail and is to appear today in Mahoning County Court.

He is accused of punching another man, fracturing the man’s nose. The other man, 46, of Boardman, held Amatore on the floor until police arrived.

A police report said that Amatore talked of being angry with his brother.

When police arrived, Amatore resisted being handcuffed and an officer used pepper spray to subdue him.

The store was evacuated for a short time.

The victim and his wife told police that Amatore initially rammed the wife’s shopping cart in the store’s dairy aisle and then pushed her backward down the aisle.

When the victim saw Amatore in the checkout line, he asked why he had rammed the cart. Amatore then mumbled something, the couple told police, and the victim said he leaned in to hear him.

That’s when Amatore began yelling and punched the victim in the nose, the couple reported.
