Twins 4, Athletics 3

MINNEAPOLIS — Joe Mauer singled home the winning run in the ninth inning after Justin Morneau hit a tying homer in the eighth as Minnesota completed a four-game sweep of slumping Oakland. Eric Chavez homered for the A’s, who have lost seven in a row — their longest skid since also dropping seven straight in late May last season.

Tigers 11, Mariners 7

SEATTLE — Justin Verlander earned his 11th win and Marcus Thames hit a three-run homer off Jeff Weaver, helping Detroit gain a four-game split. Verlander (11-3) allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings, reaching 100 mph with his overpowering fastball. He struck out six, walked one and won for the sixth time in seven starts. Thames finished with three hits and four RBIs. Magglio Ordonez and Omar Infante also homered for the Tigers, and Gary Sheffield stole home on a pickoff throw to first. Seattle got a major scare in the fifth when All-Star center fielder Ichiro Suzuki was hit around his right thigh by Verlander’s 96 mph fastball. He was lifted moments later after slowly advancing to second on a wild pitch. The team said the ball hit Suzuki in the muscle just above the knee and he has a bruised right thigh.

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

BOSTON — Jesse Litsch held Boston to one run in 62⁄3 innings, and Lyle Overbay had three hits off All-Star game winner Josh Beckett. A 22-year-old rookie making his sixth career start, Litsch (2-3) allowed nine hits and a walk while striking out two. Jeremy Accardo pitched the ninth for his 12th save. Beckett (12-3) yielded two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out eight over eight innings in his first start since earning a win with two scoreless innings in the All-Star game.

Yankees 7, Devil Rays 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Derek Jeter hit a two-run homer and Andy Phillips snapped an eighth-inning tie with an RBI single. Phillips also made a diving catch at first base with a runner on second in the eighth, starting an inning-ending double play that preserved a one-run lead. Mariano Rivera wriggled out of a two-on, none-out jam in the ninth for his 13th save.

Rangers 5, Angels 4, 11 innings

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Mark Teixeira homered leading off the 11th inning and had an RBI double in the eighth. Angels starter Jered Weaver allowed a pair of unearned runs and four hits in seven innings, struck out six and retired his last 11 batters. But the Rangers tied the score 4-all in the eighth against Scot Shields with two-out RBI doubles by Teixeira and Marlon Byrd, snapping Shields’ scoreless streak at 242⁄3 innings.

Orioles 5, White Sox 3

BALTIMORE — Brian Roberts and Corey Patterson homered, Garrett Olson earned his first major league win and Baltimore handed Chicago’s Jose Contreras his AL-high 11th loss. Aubrey Huff had two RBIs for the Orioles, who won the final three games of the series after dropping the opener. Jermaine Dye homered twice for Chicago.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Dodgers 5, Giants 3

SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles scored twice on squeeze bunts, held Barry Bonds without a hit all series and won its 11th straight game in San Francisco. Bonds’ hitless stretch reached a season-worst 20 at-bats with an 0-for-5 showing — his longest period without a hit since 2001.

Cardinals 10, Phillies 2

PHILADELPHIA — Albert Pujols hit two of St. Louis’ six homers as the Cardinals handed Philadelphia the 10,000th loss in franchise history. Pujols hit a two-run shot in the fifth that was followed by Chris Duncan’s 17th of the year for a 6-0 lead. Pujols, Juan Encarnacion and Adam Kennedy each homered in the seventh to make it 9-0. Ryan Ludwick hit a solo shot in the eighth for a 10-0 lead.

Cubs 7, Astros 6

CHICAGO — Derrek Lee broke a streak of 126 at-bats without a home run with a three-run shot in the second inning to help Chicago complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs have won 15 of their past 19 games and swept the Astros in a three-game series at Wrigley Field for the first time since May 1984. Ryan Theriot and Angel Pagan also homered for the Cubs. Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez (6-8) couldn’t hold an early 5-0 lead. He allowed six runs on seven hits in the second inning.

Mets 5, Reds 2

NEW YORK — Jose Reyes homered, Oliver Perez won in his return from the disabled list and New York got another big hit from Lastings Milledge. Reyes connected for the second time in the series, helping the Mets take three of four from Cincinnati. Adam Dunn knocked out a scoreboard panel with a long home run for Cincinnati, which has lost 14 of 20 on the road. Perez (8-6) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

Brewers 4, Rockies 3

MILWAUKEE — Pinch-hitter Kevin Mench’s tiebreaking RBI triple in the seventh lifted Milwaukee. Mench scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 for the Brewers. Jeremy Affeldt (4-2) had retired 16 of his previous 17 batters before Geoff Jenkins’ double. Matt Wise (3-1) pitched one scoreless inning in relief of Jeff Suppan and got the win. Derrick Turnbow gave up a solo homer to Brad Hawpe in the eighth, but Francisco Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth for his 28th save in 31 chances.

Marlins 5, Nationals 3

MIAMI — Miguel Cabrera hit two solo home runs and Josh Willingham added another to help Florida defeat Washington. Willingham homered for the third straight game. Cabrera has hit three homers in his past two games. Scott Olsen (7-7) gave up two runs and six hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out two and improved his home record to 5-2. Kevin Gregg was the fourth Marlins reliever and earned his 20th save in 21 chances.

Padres 4, Diamondbacks 0

PHOENIX — Justin Germano drove in a run and gave up none to help San Diego avoid a three-game sweep. Milton Bradley drove in two runs and Brian Giles had three hits for San Diego. Germano (6-3) gave up four hits in 61⁄3 innings, walking three and striking out four. Germano, who is hitting .333 (5-for-15), also singled home a run in the sixth, when the Padres chased All-Star Brandon Webb. Webb (8-7) allowed three earned runs and a season-high 11 hits in 52⁄3 innings. He walked two and struck out 10. Heath Bell, Scott Linebrink and Doug Brocail completed San Diego’s 13th shutout, most in the majors.
