Thunder first loss

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Raymond Marrow ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 7 minutes, 15 seconds remaining to help lift the Ohio Red Bulls to a 19-16 win over the New Castle Thunder in a minor league football game.

The Thunder (4-1) took a 10-0 lead but the Red Bulls got on the board when Marrow hit Richard Walker with a 59-yard touchdown pass.

The Red Bulls (5-0) trailed 16-6 at the break.

Marrow found Dajwan Stubbs for a 65-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 16-13 entering the final quarter.

Marrow completed five of nine passes for 203 yards.

Trumbull Tri-T
in tourney final

BOARDMAN — The Trumbull County Tri-T team will meet East Ohio in the 15-16 Colt sectional baseball tournament championship at the Field of Dreams tonight at 6 p.m.

Trumbull lost its opener in the event then defeated four straight teams — Mahoning County, Austintown, Paper Center and Marietta.

Gangloff competing
in Pan Am swimming

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The swimming competition at the Pan American Games begins today with 2004 Olympic gold medalist Mark Gangloff of Stow, Ohio, going in the 100-meter breast stroke.

Gangloff won the Athens gold as a member of the 4x100 medley relay.

“This is my big meet of the summer and I’m looking for it to be my breakout meet,” Gangloff said. “It was a bit of a disappointment not making the world championship team, so I want to come here and prove to myself that I belong at world championships and at the Olympics.

“This is my fourth time in Brazil. I usually come here to see World Cup games because the atmosphere is so exciting. I really love it here .”

US softball team
blanks Canada, 7-0

OKLAHOMA CITY — Jennie Finch had her Ace. And now, the U.S. softball team has its ace back at full strength.

Fourteen months after giving birth to her first child, Finch threw a three-hitter in her longest outing of the year as the United States advanced to the championship game of the World Cup of Softball with a 7-0 win against Canada on Sunday. Finch (1-0) struck out eight in six innings and extended her scoreless streak to 19 1-3 innings.

“I haven’t felt this good in a long time,” said Finch, whose son was born in 2006. “It’s been a long year of hard work in the weight room and on the field trying to get back.”

Crystl Bustos and Natasha Watley hit two-run home runs to get the American offense started, and Finch pitched the U.S. to its 21st consecutive victory.

Finch had a 2-0 lead before she stepped into the circle, courtesy of Bustos’ team-best sixth home run this year in the top of the first.

policies debated

The satiric video posted on the Houston Chronicle’s Web site tries to answer the question of how long — or short — is 45 seconds.

One reporter hovers nearby wielding a stopwatch as another poses a question to Texans quarterback Matt Schaub. Before Schaub can answer, the timer calls out, “And we’re done.” The two reporters dart away, leaving a puzzled Schaub to shrug his shoulders at the camera.

The scene pokes fun at the NFL’s policy limiting media organizations to 45 seconds of online video per day of team personnel shot on club property. The abrupt Schaub interview is one of several in the clip that combined aren’t supposed to exceed 45 seconds.

Before last season, the NFL didn’t have a policy governing online video for the simple reason that there wasn’t anything to address. But as technologies evolve — along with the desires and expectations of fans — sports leagues and media organizations can disagree on appropriate uses.

Tahoe celebrity golf

STATELINE, Nev. — Former NFL Chris Chandler won the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, making seven birdies in a nine-hole stretch Sunday to beat six-time winner Rick Rhoden by six points in the modified Stableford event. Chandler, who twice birdied three consecutive holes and finished with eight birdies and three bogeys for a 5-under 67, had a tournament-record 78 points in the modified Stableford scoring system that puts a premium on birdies and eagles.
