YOUNGSTOWN — A man and a teenager were reported in stable condition late Wednesday after being shot in an East Side housing complex earlier in the day.

Police said one man, 19, who lives on Plazaview Court, was shot in the buttocks, and a 16-year-old boy, who lives on Katherine Avenue, was shot in the chest. Police said the shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m. at the Plazaview Court apartments off McGuffey Road.

At the time of the shooting, many children who live in the apartment complex were outside playing. Three women who live in Building 962 said they heard “pow, pow, pow” and “bang, bang, bang” and hit the floor near the front door and didn’t see anything. One woman said her car, a white Neon, was hit by the gunfire.

Police said the mother of the 19-year-old victim took her son and the 16-year-old to the hospital. The mother told police she saw a green Chevrolet Impala with three people inside pass by, and the driver pulled out a gun and began shooting.

meteorologist reports

YOUNGSTOWN — Although the 45-minute downpour of rain the Valley received Wednesday cooled things off for the time being, Mark Adams, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Cleveland, said that it won’t mean much, as far as moistening dry ground. “It might help for growing purposes for something like grass for a day or two,” Adams said of Wednesday’s rain. “What we need is a couple of rains that occur in a week’s time to make a difference. But, if it doesn’t rain anytime soon, [Wednesday’s] rain won’t matter too much.” Adams added that the weather pattern is not looking quite as bad as it’s been recently in terms of rain coming, as we may be seeing some more rain this evening.

Man threatens mother,
Liberty police say

LIBERTY — A man is charged with aggravated menacing after police say he threatened his mother with a gun when she disturbed his sleep. Police report that Whitney Wiseman, 19, of New Road, was sleeping in his mother’s Holly Drive apartment Tuesday evening, and his mother disrupted his slumber while moving items to another apartment in the building. Reports say the woman told officers Wiseman became “enraged,” pulled out a semi-automatic gun and threatened to pistol whip the woman. He also threatened to shoot her, reports said. Wiseman was arrested when he returned to the apartment later in the day. Police did confiscate a firearm from him. Wiseman, who is free on a personal recognizance bond, has been banned from the Holly Drive property.

Man flees police

AUSTINTOWN — A high-speed chase turned foot chase put a 45-year-old Youngstown man in the hospital early Wednesday. Deometeric C. Brown told police he fled at speeds as high as 65 mph through Austintown and Youngstown because his license was suspended. Police report that he was driving under five suspensions and has two outstanding warrants. Police attempted to pull him over citing an insecure front license plate at 2:30 a.m. on Burkey Road. Brown fled police down Burkey Road to Meridian Road. The five-minute chase led police onto Bears Den Road, finally ending at a dead end on West Avenue. There, Brown abandoned his car and fled toward the Mahoning River. In the process, Brown injured himself climbing a razor-wire-topped fence. Police said they found him climbing up the riverbank bleeding from his head, arms, chest and hands. He was arrested through a combined effort from Austintown and Youngstown police and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

13 prostitution arrests

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Thirteen people were arrested in a prostitution sting on the city’s south side. City and Pennsylvania State Police worked undercover Tuesday. Police said they arrested one female who was offering to perform sexual acts for an undercover officer in exchange for money, and 11 men were arrested for requesting sexual acts from another undercover officer. One man was arrested for disorderly conduct, police said.
