Mahoning Township planning to build sewage treatment plant

HILLSVILLE, Pa. — Mahoning Township supervisors authorized Township Solicitor Thomas Leslie on Tuesday to draw up a purchase agreement for five acres for construction of a sewage treatment plant.

Supervisors would not disclose the exact location of the Edinburg property at their meeting Tuesday because the sale is not final.

Supervisor Poncho Exposito said the property is being bought by a third party who will then sell five acres to the township. The township engineer also was authorized to prepare a subdivision plan.

Supervisors previously had agreed that building their own sewage treatment plant is the most feasible option to collect sewage from the proposed Edinburg/Hillsville sanitary sewer, which would serve 591 homes. All the funding is not in place for that sewer line.

Also, Exposito reported the replacement of the Hilltown Bridge on Churchill Road was completed late last month. The county bridge was widened from one to two lanes.

Supervisors agreed to raise wages for township workers who do not make the new $7.25 hourly minimum wage, which became effective July 1.

They also discussed purchasing a fence or cameras to discourage dumping of trash on the pavement around township trash bins.

Only township senior citizens are allowed to bring their household trash to the township bins. The bins are emptied twice a week, and signs warn residents not to dump trash on the ground when bins are full.

The problem, however, is a continuing one and supervisors said they may consider discontinuing the program if a solution is not found.
