Scrappers postponed

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ game Wednesday against the Vermont Lake Monsters was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today starting at 6:05 p.m.

Pavlik to appear
on Trivisonno show

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown middleweight Kelly Pavlik and his father, Mike, will be on the Mike Trivisonno Show today on WTAM-AM 1100.

Trivisonno’s show begins at 3 p.m. and Pavlik is expected to be on the air around 4.

On Friday, Pavlik will throw out the first pitch at Jacobs Field for the Indians game against Kansas City.

Saturday at 2 p.m., Pavlik will sign autographs at the Canfield Harley Davidson dealership on State Rt. 224.

Pavlik is also on the cover of this month’s Ring magazine, the premier boxing publication in the country.

Boardman wrestler
takes 4th in Austria

BOARDMAN — Sam Cambouris, a wrestler and incoming freshman at Boardman High School, took fourth place in the People to People Sports Ambassador Games in Vienna, Austria, in the 59 kg (130-pound) weight class.

Cambouris arrived in Vienna on June 24 and met his teammates at the Viva Sport Centre. After two days of intense training under the direction of Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner and assistance by coach Eric Diefendorfer of Boardman Glenwood Middle School, the USA team entered international competition with nine other teams, including Hungary, Austria and Germany.

The USA team ended tournament play with six medalists and six other wrestlers in the top six in their weight class to finish fifth overall.

HARTFORD — With midseason championships in the rearview mirror, the Fantastic Five divisions will begin their push towards the title on Saturday at Sharon Speedway.

Steelers moves

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers added two more players to their roster Wednesday, running back Larry Croom and wide receiver Dan Sheldon.

The team signed Croom, who was an undrafted rookie free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2004. He has played for three seasons in NFL Europe and has been spent time on the rosters or practice squads of the Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions and San Diego Chargers.

The Steelers picked up Sheldon off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Sheldon has also played in NFL Europe.

The Steelers open training camp at St. Vincent College near Latrobe on July 23.

Pro Football HOF

CANTON — Former Browns guard Gene Hickerson will join five other former NFL standouts for the induction of the newest class of enshrinees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at 6 p.m. on Aug. 4.

It is the first time the event will be held in the evening.

Michael Irvin, Bruce Matthews, Charlie Sanders, Thurman Thomas and Roger Wehrli will increase the number of the Hall of Fame’s honor roll to 241.

Penguins move

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Alex Goligoski to a two-year entry-level contract, meaning he will not return for his senior season at the University of Minnesota.

Goligoski, the Penguins’ second-round draft pick in the 2004 draft, had 25 goals and 73 assists in 117 games with Minnesota over the past three seasons.

Blue Jackets move

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets signed center Derek MacKenzie and defenseman Dan Smith to one-year contracts on Wednesday.

MacKenzie, 26, has spent the past six seasons as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers organization. He was scoreless in four games with the Thrashers last season and had 14 goals and 23 assists with Chicago of the American Hockey League. The Thrashers’ sixth pick in the 1999 draft, he has two assists in 20 NHL games.

The 30-year-old Smith had one goal and 10 assists in 80 games with Grand Rapids of the AHL last season. The seventh pick by Colorado in the 1995 draft, he played seven games with the Edmonton Oilers two years ago.

For the fifth time in their seven years, the Blue Jackets will open their season at home. For the first time, that game will be against the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
