Moving up: The Scrappers sent right-handed pitcher Kyle Collina, who was in his second season here, up to Class A full-season Kinston in the Carolina League. Collina had an 0-1 record and a 2.16 earned run average while throwing 82⁄3 innings this season.
Off day: Mahoning Valley and the New York-Penn League will enjoy a rare day-off today before returning to action Wednesday when the Scrappers open a six-game road trip in Burlington, Vt., against the Vermont Lake Monsters. That three-game series will be followed by a series with Tri-Cities in Troy, N.Y. The Scrappers return home on July 17.
Starters struggle: Mahoning Valley’s starting pitching has struggled over their last 10 games as they’ve compiled a 5.67 ERA. The team’s bullpen over that same span is 3.02.
Hot and cold: Scrappers center fielder Juan Valdes went into Monday’s game with Lowell hitting .382 over his last 10 games. On the other hand, infielder Nick Petrucci is just two for his last 26 trips to the plate.
Can’t lose: By winning the first two games of the series, the Scrappers assured themselves of winning the season series against the Spinners. Since this is the only time the two teams meet during the regular season, that makes it the fifth time in six years the Scrappers have won the series.
