Boardman family flees fire

BOARDMAN — Missie Smith and her children learned from a neighbor this morning that their back porch was on fire.

"We got the kids out, we got the dogs out and we got the cars out," Smith said, adding that no one was injured.

Fire crews from Boardman and the Cardinal Joint Fire District of Canfield were battling the blaze which broke out between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. on Tori Pines Court.

"I asked them if they could get out any scrapbooks, photo albums or photographs," Smith said as she began to cry.

Fire Chief James Dorman said the fire appeared to have started on the back porch and spread to the upstairs and roof. A cause hasn't been determined.
