A HARRY POTTER GLOSSARY

Here’s a rundown of the basic plot and some definitions:

Harry Potter and his two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, are fighting the Dark Lord/Voldemort. The final book will come down to a fight between Harry and Voldemort. There is a prophecy that Albus Dumbledore, who was the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry until one of the other professors killed him in book six, shared with Harry. This prophecy, it is believed, is about Harry and Voldemort, because Voldemort killed Harry’s parents and was unable to kill Harry.

The prophecy: “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches … born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives … the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies …”

Quidditch: Players score points by throwing the Quaffel through the goal, hoops high in the air. Bludgers are bewitched iron pieces that try to knock the players off their brooms. The Golden Snitch, a golden ball with silver wings, flies around, and, when caught by the Seeker, the game is over.

Animagus Transformation: Allows a witch or wizard to transform into an animal at will.

Horcrux Creation Spell: After committing the act of murder, the Horcrux Creation Spell is used to encase the torn portion of the killer’s soul into an object or creature.

Godric’s Hollow: The name of the village where James and Lily Potter hid from Voldemort, moving there with their young son Harry in 1981. Voldemort set out to murder the boy while he was too young to fight back. James and Lily sought a sanctuary, a place where no one could possibly find them, hidden by the powerful magic of the Fidelius Charm, which allows someone or something to be hidden away for an indefinite period of time. The location is a secret known only to one person, the Secret-Keeper. But the Secret-Keeper of James and Lily betrayed them to the Dark Lord. Their school friend Peter Pettigrew was their Secret-Keeper and was in alliance with Voldemort. By Peter telling Voldemort the Potters’ whereabouts, he was able to murder James and Lily.

Sorting Ceremony: This ceremony begins the start-of-year feast at Hogwarts. A teacher leads the new students into the Great Hall, where the rest of the school is assembled. The Sorting Hat is an ancient wizard’s hat that could think, speak, sing, read minds and even had its own personality. The first-year students are called up to sit on the stool, where a teacher places the Sorting Hat on the student’s head. The Sorting Hat then announces which house the student will be in to the entire school.

Squib: A person who had no magical powers although born into a wizarding family.

Death Eater: Witches and wizards who support Voldemort. Some of the Death Eaters had children at Hogwarts.

Deathly Hallows: Only J.K. Rowling knows this one. Perhaps it has something to do with Godric’s Hollow.
