Amateur boxing card
set Wednesday

GIRARD — Steel Valley Promotions will present an amateur boxing card Wednesday at Avon Oaks staring at 7:30 p.m.

Called Wednesday Night Fights at the Oaks, the show will consist of 15 three-round bouts. Doors will open at 6.

One of the match-ups will be between two females — Stephanie Sahli of Struthers and Alecia (Foutz) DeFrank of Girard — for the Queen of the Ring title sponsored by the Warren Boxing Association.

Sahli is a two-time K.O. Drugs high school champion. DeFrank has a 2-0 record.

One of the top male entries on the card is Juan Salinas of Youngstown and the Southside Boxing Club.

Salinas was named Fighter of the Night at the previous Avon Oaks fight card last August.

Joining him in another bout will be Mark Givens, also from the Southside Boxing Club.

Among the other fighters billed are John Gregory of Youngstown and the Downtown Boxing Club and Connor Young of Canfield.

Pairings for all 14 of the male bouts have not yet been made.

DiAgosta receives
wrestling scholarship

WHEELING, W. Va. — At the annual OVAC Banquet of Champions held at Wes Banco Arena a local wrestler was awarded a scholarships so he could continue his academic/athletic career.

East Liverpool's Eric DiAgosta was presented the Lucas D. Sedgmer Memorial Scholarship of $1000.

DiAgosta was a three-time state placer.

Boxing benefit show

YOUNGSTOWN — Rusty’s BoodyBoxing/SafeBoxing will participate in a benefit show at Mt. Caramel Church.

The Mt. Caramel Church benefit is scheduled July 21.

Canfield High seniors
receive scholarships

CANFIELD — The Canfield Football Alumni Club recently held its annual golf outing.

The event raises funds for college scholarships that are awarded to graduating Canfield High School seniors.

The funds raised at the golf outing enabled the alumni club to award $1000 scholarships to Patrick Bellish and Justin Bonanno.

Due to the overwhelming support of this years golf outing, the alumni club was also able to award additional $500 scholarships to graduating football seniors — Mike Hoelzel, D.J. Haurin, Paul Sabol and Matt Glove.

Maher on mission
trip to Belgium

MINERAL RIDGE — Mineral Ridge High School student athlete Susan Maher is preparing for a mission trip to Belgium with SportQuest, as a member of the group’s basketball mission team.

Maher is among only 200 student athletes in the United States to be selected this year to travel with SportQuest, a ministry dedicated to equipping teens with the tools necessary to reach the world through sports.

SportQuest mission trips are specially designed for high school age Christian athletes.

This year SportQuest will be sending mission teams to Ireland, Belgium and India.

Maher will meet American team members and team leaders in New York City on July 17th and fly together to Belgium for a four-day training camp in Brussels.

At the training camp they will meet Belgium team members and leadership and participate in many team-building exercises designed to turn a group of individuals into a fully functioning team.

The group will also attend classes to prepare for their trip.

After the four-day training camp, each athlete will be placed on a team that will travel to different parts of Belgium to conduct camps in their respective sports to local youth within the area.

Golf instruction

WESTFIELD CENTER — More than 130 golfers from 16 area high school golf teams received instruction from nine Northern Ohio PGA professionals at the seventh annual Westfield Junior Golf Academy Friday.

Presented by Westfield Group Foundation, the free golf clinic was conducted at Westfield Group Country Club, home of the 2007 Westfield Junior PGA Championship.

Participating schools include: Alliance High School, Amherst Steele, Brunswick, Canfield, Canton McKinley, Cloverleaf, Elyria, Fairview Park, Highland, Hillsdale, Lake Ridge Academy, Lorain Admiral King, Medina, North Olmsted, Orrville and Strongsville.
