Fireworks cause injury and damage

YOUNGSTOWN — Fireworks shot off on Independence Day did some property damage and caused minor injury.

A rocket that hit an 11-year-old South Brockway Avenue girl in the back burned the child’s shirt and her 15-year-old brother was burned in the right calf around 11 p.m. Wednesday, police were told.

The parents said the children, who were in their front yard in the 50 block of South Brockway, were hit with fireworks a man was aiming down the street.

When police spoke to the man he denied shooting fireworks at the children but did admit shooting fireworks in the direction of friends down the street.

A second report shows fireworks tossed by the same man in the 30 block of South Brockway Avenue hit the quarter panel of an SUV parked across the street and did about $100 damage.

It wasn’t immediately known if the man was issued a citation.

A woman who lives on Wilbur Avenue discovered the rear window of her Lexus busted out when she went to check out the sound breaking glass in her backyard at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday that followed the sound of fireworks shot off in the 500 block of Miller Street.

A New York Avenue family who thought they heard fireworks discovered it was really gunfire at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bullet holes were found in the family’s living room and one round pierced a backyard pool.

There was no mistaking the gunfire in the 2800 block of Idlewood Avenue for fireworks at 12:15 a.m. Thursday. Police who checked out a report of men firing guns in a driveway found no suspects but did collect a shotgun shell and 12 casings from three other firearms.
