2 rape attempts

NILES — Police are investigating two attempted rapes in the city. A 34-year-old woman told police she was at a tavern when her boyfriend had to leave. About 3:30 a.m. Thursday, she was leaving when a man offered her a ride home. She told police she was driven to a location she couldn’t recognized. The man told her to get out of the car and began to remove her clothes. As she was forced onto the hood of the car, men on four all-terrain vehicles drove up as she screamed. Her assailant drove off, and she was given a ride home by one of the ATV drivers.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 29-year-old Niles woman said she was walking to a Grant Street bar when three men pulled up in a car, got out and fondled her near the railroad tracks at Mahoning Avenue and Langley Street. She told police she managed to get away, run to a friend’s Pratt Street home and called the police.

Men in car robbed

YOUNGSTOWN — The occupants of a disabled car told police they were robbed around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 3500 block of Glenwood Avenue when they got out to change a flat tire. The young men, two from Canfield and one from Berlin Center, said three male juveniles approached, one with a gun, and demanded wallets. The teenage boys took the cash out, threw the wallets down and then took off running.

Car assault suspect

CAMPBELL — A Youngstown woman who allegedly attempted to run over her ex-boyfriend with a 1999 Dodge Intrepid was arrested Tuesday. Taqualla Jackson, 23, of Myrtle Avenue, is charged with felonious assault, failure to comply, obstructing official business and criminal endangering for the June 24 case. Police responded to a distress call to find a man lying on the street at Lettie and Freedom avenues here, according to police reports. The victim, a 29-year-old Youngstown resident, suffered major injuries in the attack, police said.

Assault charges filed

YOUNGSTOWN — Laqresha Mahone, 31, of Helena Avenue is charged with assault and two counts of child endangering after an encounter with a Boardman woman on Overland Avenue. She was arraigned Thursday in municipal court and placed on electronically monitored house arrest. She will be back in court July 13. Police said she used her van to cut off a red car and then proceeded to beat the driver Tuesday evening. The victim told police that the father of her 4-year-old son is Mahone’s husband. The child endangering charges were filed because kids were in both the van and car.

Suspected robbery fails

YOUNGSTOWN — The driver of a stolen Chevrolet pickup truck lowered the tailgate and then backed into the sliding glass doors at Sparkle Market, 3623 S. Meridian Road, just before 8 p.m. Wednesday. The driver drove off when he realized that someone witnessed the crime. The witness followed the truck and got the license plate number. The plate, too, turned out to be stolen. The truck was later found abandoned in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Canfield Road. Police suspect the driver was after the ATM located inside the market.

Barn fire cause up in air

KINSMAN — Firefighters are still determining the cause of a barn fire at the John Fitch dairy farm at 8913 Ward North Road. Fire Chief Glen Marvin said flames broke out shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday in a three-sided metal building, in which hay and equipment were stored. Flames destroyed the hay, a tractor and baler. There is no estimate of damage.

Pit bull bites boy

YOUNGSTOWN — A Council Rock Drive woman visiting friends in the 800 block of Parkview Avenue on Wednesday afternoon with her 8-year-old son told police that the boy was bitten by a pit bull owned by one of the residents. Police noted injuries to the boy’s nose and lips. The dog warden’s office was notified.

Flood program purchase

LISBON — Columbiana County Commissioner Jim Hoppel announced the county will close today on its first property bought through the flood mitigation program. The city of Lisbon bought out the home of George and Tracy House, 302 Pritchard Ave., Lisbon, for $52,000. The county applied for the program three years ago, after flooding damaged the area. The money, which came from the state, will be used to buy 21 homes, 11 of which are in Lisbon, that are located in flood zones, the commissioner said.
