Wier pitches one-hitter for Falcons


The Astro Falcons beat Simon Roofing, 10-0, in a Class B playoff game.

STRUTHERS — Matt Wier pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out five and walking three, as Astro Falcons defeated Simon Roofing 10-0 in five innings in the first game of their best-of-three Class B playoff series at Cene Park.

Astro scored six times in the bottom of the first inning.

Joe Bako had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs, while Mark Lapikas added three hits and two RBIs, Drew Turocy doubled and tripled and Joe Koch had two hits.

Mark Novotny singled for Simon.

Warren AA

WARREN — Outstanding pitching performances carried Skiffey Neopolitan Dental and Callahan’s Irish Pub to baseball victories in the Warren Class AA League.

Richard Bencha pitched a five-hitter over the distance as Skiffey beat the Reds, 5-3. And Josh Lawrence and Cliff Panezich combined to pitch a three-hitter with nine strikeouts, as Callahan Irish Pub rolled past the P.I.&I. Express, 11-1. Panezich had six strikeouts in three innings.

Jim Skiffey had two hits and one RBI to lead Skiffey, while Jim Claar also had two hits and Mike Hanck and Vince Gentile one RBI each.

Mike Johnson had two hits for the Reds.

Callahan was led by Brian George with four hits and three RBIs, while Panezich had three hits and two RBIs and Jeremy Albani one hit with two RBIs.
