Man dies in accident

BRISTOLVILLE — An 18-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when his vehicle veered off county Road 242 and struck a tree. Eric J. Harkelrode of West Farmington was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at St. Elizabeth Heath Center. A juvenile passenger also was treated at the hospital for minor injuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Foreign kids in town

YOUNGSTOWN — Children’s International Summer Villages is hosting a village in the Youngstown area this summer. There are 44, 11-year-old children from 10 foreign countries now in the Mahoning Valley with their leaders. CISV is a volunteer-based educational organization dedicated to fostering world peace through international understanding and cross-cultural experiences. It features a mix of educational, cultural and sporting activities, which emphasize cooperative global and intercultural living. There are children from Brazil, Germany, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Italy, Jordan, Norway, Philippines and Sweden staying for one month at the Youngstown Village this month. The exchange students will be performing at Youngstown State University Festival of the Arts from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The local chapter of CISV, which includes the tri-county area as well as the Cleveland area, has held various fundraisers to pay for the cost of housing, feeding, and entertaining our guests for one month. Two hurt in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating a shooting on the South Side early Wednesday that hospitalized two men. South Side residents Fanon Vines, 29, and Anthony Mascarella, 19, were sitting in a car on Market Street near Princeton Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when they heard five or six shots fired, Vines told police. Neither victim saw any suspects, police reports said. After realizing they had been shot, the men reportedly drove themselves to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police interviewed Vines on Wednesday; Mascarella however was undergoing surgery and was unavailable to speak with police. Both men have since been released from the hospital, according to St. Elizabeth personnel.

Prank leads to gunfire

YOUNGSTOWN — A prank involving firecrackers is blamed in a holiday shooting outside an East Side convenience store. One victim told police he was playing a practical joke when he set off firecrackers at 6 p.m. Wednesday outside a store at Albert Street and McGuffey Road. But one shopper, who was apparently frightened by the noise, didn’t appreciate his sense of humor. The victims, ages 34 and 25, reported a 27-year-old man they knew began firing at them with a handgun. The men reported almost losing control of their vehicle as they sped away. Neither was injured, reports said.

Construction driver killed

NORTH BLOOMFIELD — The driver of a Bobcat construction vehicle was killed Tuesday afternoon when his vehicle flipped on state Route 45. The victim of the crash has been identified as Craig Peterson, said officials from the Trumbull County 911 dispatch center. No other details were available at press time.

Track, field and bowling

Education fair set

YOUNGSTOWN — Twelve trade schools and institutions of higher education will be represented at the Salvation Army’s education fair July 26. Information about curriculum, financial aid and employment opportunities will be presented.
