CHAMPION — A 20-year-old student at the University of Cincinnati has been released from a Cincinnati hospital where he was being treated for bacterial meningitis. Andrew Barnes of Champion, who was admitted June 24 to Good Samaritan Hospital, was treated with antibiotics for the infection — potentially fatal if it remains untreated. A hospital spokeswoman said Barnes was released Monday morning. Cincinnati Health Department spokeswoman Bernadette Watson had said that Barnes had not been feeling well before going to a Delta Tau Delta fraternity party June 22. The health department spokeswoman had said about 100 people who were at the party had been treated with prophalaxix, an antibiotic, at the university’s student health center, city health department or by private physicians. Watson said Monday she doesn’t know of any other meningitis cases since the Barnes infection.

Police still searching for
suspect in shooting

CAMPBELL — Police continue to look for the person responsible for shooting a 16-year-old girl in the legs Sunday night while she was standing in front of the Community Center at Roosevelt Park. The girl was reportedly leaning on a railing, talking to her boyfriend, when one shotgun round was fired from a small black vehicle, police reports said. The boyfriend had been called to the vehicle before the shooting, reports said. The victim and her boyfriend reported they did not recognize the vehicle nor its passenger. Police found the victim inside a Jean Avenue home. She was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was treated. She and her boyfriend reported they could not think of anyone who would want to cause them harm, reports said.

Illegals detained

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Seven illegal immigrants from Honduras were picked up by Hermitage Police. Police said four were in a vehicle stopped for a minor traffic violation on South Hermitage Road at 7 p.m. Saturday. Police found another three at the Starlite Motel, also on South Hermitage Road. All seven were placed in custody and police were waiting on Monday for immigration officials to take them.

Water tests all clear

YOUNGSTOWN — No violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act were reported by the Youngstown Water Department. About 65,000 laboratory tests were performed in the past year on the water looking for about 150 contaminants, and none were found, according to the water department. A report of the tests was included in the latest bills sent to the city’s water customers. The city sells water to residents of Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Canfield Township and city, Liberty, Mineral Ridge, Girard and North Jackson. Seven cited, one arrest
at vehicle checkpoint

BAZETTA — No drunken drivers were picked up during a weekend checkpoint on Warren-Meadville Road. Of the 700 vehicles that went through the checkpoint Sunday, two citations were issued for driving without a license, five for driving on expired plates and one was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Participating departments were police from Bazetta and Fowler townships, Ohio State Highway Patrols and rangers from Mosquito State Park.

Annual Ox Roast

MESOPOTAMIA — The 34th annual Ox Roast will be Friday through Sunday in the center of town at the intersection of state Route 534 and state Route 87. The Mesopotamia Volunteer Fire Department depends on the proceeds from the Ox Roast to fund 75 percent of its operating costs and the purchase of new equipment. Admission is free and parking is available at the fire station.

Community drum circle

BOARDMAN — A community drum circle is being offered Friday for military service men and women and their families. Ancient rhythm techniques that have been shown to reduce anxiety and stress while boosting the immune system will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Luke Church, 5235 South Avenue, said organizer Pam Susany. No drumming experience is necessary. Participants will be provided with drums.
