CHAMPION — A 20-year-old student at the University of Cincinnati has been released from a Cincinnati hospital where he was being treated for bacterial meningitis. Andrew Barnes of Champion, who was admitted June 24 to Good Samaritan Hospital, was treated with antibiotics for the infection — potentially fatal if it remains untreated. A hospital spokeswoman said Barnes was released Monday morning. Cincinnati Health Department spokeswoman Bernadette Watson had said that Barnes had not been feeling well before going to a Delta Tau Delta fraternity party June 22. The health department spokeswoman had said about 100 people who were at the party had been treated with prophalaxix, an antibiotic, at the university’s student health center, city health department or by private physicians. Watson said Monday she doesn’t know of any other meningitis cases since the Barnes infection.

The boyfriend had been called to the vehicle before the shooting, reports said. The victim and her boyfriend reported they did not recognize the vehicle nor its passenger. Police found the victim inside a Jean Avenue home. She was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was treated. She and her boyfriend reported they could not think of anyone who would want to cause them harm, reports said.
