MLB ROUNDUP | Sunday’s other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Angels 4, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE — John Lackey outpitched rookie Jeremy Guthrie to earn his 11th win, and Casey Kotchman and Mike Napoli hit slump-breaking home runs to help Los Angeles. The Angels improved to 51-31, the best record in franchise history after 82 games. Lackey (11-5) allowed two runs and four hits in 71⁄3 innings, striking out five and walking three. His 11 wins is tied for second in the AL behind C.C. Sabathia (12). Baltimore had runners on first and third with one out in the ninth, but Francisco Rodriguez got Brian Roberts to fly out to Vladimir Guerrero, and Melvin Mora was thrown out trying to score from third. It was Rodriguez’s 24th save in 26 chances. Guthrie (4-2) surrendered four runs and four hits in eight innings.
Athletics 11, Yankees 5
NEW YORK — Jack Cust and Dan Johnson homered in Oakland’s seven-run second inning. Dan Haren (10-2) pitched 51⁄3 innings to win his career-best 10th straight decision and improve to 4-0 in seven career starts against the Yankees. Oakland was ranked 13th of 14 teams in the AL in runs scored entering play, but roughed up Andy Pettitte (4-6) on its way to taking two of three at Yankee Stadium. He gave up nine hits and eight runs, seven earned, in his shortest outing since he recorded five outs for the Yankees against the Chicago Cubs on June 8, 2003. It was the most runs allowed by Pettitte since he surrendered 10 runs, seven earned, in 42⁄3 innings for Houston against Florida on April 4, 2006.
Rangers 2, Red Sox 1
BOSTON — Kameron Loe won his fourth consecutive start, and Michael Young had a pair of hits on Sunday for the Texas Rangers. Loe (5-6) allowed one run, six hits and two walks in six innings. He hasn’t lost since being sent to Triple-A after winning just once in his first 15 starts. Eric Gagne entered with two outs in the eighth when Akinori Otsuka left with an undisclosed injury after covering first base on Jason Varitek’s grounder. He retired Alex Cora on a soft groundout to second, then pitched a hitless ninth for his 10th save. Julian Tavarez (5-6) was charged with two runs — one earned — seven hits and three walks in 52⁄3 innings.
White Sox 3, Royals 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jon Garland, aided by Paul Konerko’s 15th home run, maintained his mastery over Kansas City to close out a 6-1 road trip for the White Sox. Garland (6-5) went seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits and raised his career mark against Kansas City to 15-5 in 28 starts. Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 24 chances. John Thomson (1-1), signed on June 22 after being released by the Toronto organization, allowed two runs on seven hits in 32⁄3 innings.
Tigers 1, Twins 0
DETROIT — Jeremy Bonderman beat Scott Baker in an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, and Marcus Thames homered with two outs in the eighth inning to lift Detroit Tigers. Bonderman (9-1) allowed six hits in eight innings, striking out seven and walking one. Baker (2-3) nearly matched him, giving up three hits and throwing only 79 pitches for his first complete game in 33 major league starts. The right-hander walked one and struck out three.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cardinals 11, Reds 7
CINCINNATI — Ryan Ludwick hit a solo homer and a pivotal three-run shot Sunday, offsetting another homer by Ken Griffey Jr. and leading St. Louis. The Cardinals overcame a disappointing start by newcomer Mike Maroth, who gave up Griffey’s 585th career homer and left the game after failing to get an out in the fourth inning. Reliever Troy Percival (2-0), back in baseball after two years, got his second victory of the series by pitching out of a threat in the fourth. Reds rookie Homer Bailey (2-2) got hit hard for the second straight start. The defining moment came in the third, when Ludwick hit a knee-high fastball to center. Ludwick added a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the fourth off Ricky Stone.
Phillies 5, Mets 3
PHILADELPHIA — Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer, Kyle Kendrick pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Phillies salvaged the finale of a four-game series. Kendrick (3-0) gave up two runs and six hits in a career-high 62⁄3 innings. Kendrick walked three and didn’t strike out a batter. J.C. Romero got the final out of the seventh and Brian Sanches pitched a scoreless eighth. Mike Zagurski got two outs in the ninth before Ruben Gotay’s RBI single off Antonio Alfonseca cut it to 5-3. Alfonseca then retired Julio Franco for his sixth save in seven chances. Rollins provided the big hit off starter Mike Pelfrey (0-6) in the third inning. The shortstop was 1-for-14 in the series before his 14th homer gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead.
Cubs 5, Brewers 1
CHICAGO — Jason Marquis allowed four hits in seven innings to win for the first time in almost two months, and the Chicago Cubs won for the eighth in nine games. Aramis Ramirez doubled in two runs in the first inning, and Derrek Lee and Mark DeRosa added RBI singles in the third as the Cubs took a 4-0 lead. That was enough for Marquis (6-4), who won for the first time since beating Pittsburgh 1-0 on May 9. He allowed one run, struck out five and walked one. His lone mistake was Corey Hart’s leadoff homer in the sixth.
Astros 12, Rockies 0
HOUSTON — Lance Berkman homered and had four RBIs, and Wandy Rodriguez won for just the third time in eight starts. Berkman’s two-run homer off Tom Martin in the sixth was his first of the season batting right-handed. Earlier, he had a two-run double batting left-handed against Colorado starter Rodrigo Lopez (4-2). Rodriguez (5-7) allowed three hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two. He threw 117 pitches, matching a season high.
Marlins 6, Braves 5, 10 innings
MIAMI — Josh Willingham had a career-best five hits, including a game-ending single in the 10th inning for Florida. Miguel Olivo tied it with a leadoff homer against Braves closer Bob Wickman in the bottom of the ninth. Yunel Escobar’s two-run single off Kevin Gregg with two outs in the top half gave Atlanta a 5-4 lead. Miguel Cabrera singled to start the 10th and advanced when Rafael Soriano (2-1) threw wildly to second for an error after fielding Jason Wood’s bunt. Brett Carroll then ran for Cabrera. Willingham lined Soriano’s 1-0 pitch down the left-field line to score Carroll from second. Lee Gardner (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.
Giants 13, Diamondbacks 0
SAN FRANCISCO — Rookie Tim Lincecum struck out a career-high 12 batters and got a key hit from Barry Bonds in one of the pitcher’s finest efforts yet — even if it wasn’t a home run by No. 25. Lincecum pitched seven shutout innings, Bonds doubled in two runs, Bengie Molina hit a three-run homer and Ryan Klesko drove in four runs for San Francisco.
Dodgers 5, Padres 0
LOS ANGELES — Chad Billingsley pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, Matt Kemp and Rafael Furcal homered, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Padres to avoid a three-game sweep. The Dodgers stopped a five-game losing skid to the Padres, who had won four in a row and were seeking a second sweep of their NL West rivals in baseball’s tightest division.
