Resentencing planned
WARREN — Donna Roberts, formerly of Howland Township and sentenced to death for her part in the murder of her ex-husband, will be resentenced Aug. 15. Roberts was convicted in 2004 and sentenced after being found guilty of aggravated murder with the death specification for conspiring to kill and then murdering Robert Fingerhut. Her boyfriend at the time, Nate Jackson of Youngstown, also was sentenced to death. He is appealing his 2002 conviction.
During the sentencing phase of Roberts’ trial, Roberts asked Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to sentence her to death, so that she could take a stand on racial equality and expose and oust corrupt police officials. Jackson is black, and she is white.
Roberts appealed, and the Ohio Supreme Court remanded her resentencing to Judge Stuard, after ruling the judge didn’t allow her to make a statement to the jury before sentencing, and because the prosecution helped the judge prepare the written portion of the sentencing.
