Contemporary art featured at Hoyt

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave., will offer four new contemporary art exhibits from July 8 through Aug. 3. A public reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. July 8.

“On the Fringe”, a collection of new works by New York artist Carmen Hay Kolodzey, layers pattern and color from fabrics with often painted and textured gauzy surfaces to create an illusionary surface. Kolodzey is a German native who now lives in New York.

Mark Klos’ collection or oil painting, “Suburban Spaces,” depicts studio settings and scenes inside and around the artist’s home in Baltimore. The mysterious images suggest the presence of daily life — a cell phone next to bottled water or a garden hose splayed out on a patio next to a bright red cooler — even though the human presence is eerily missing. Klos is an art instructor in Maryland.

In “Nature House,” Virginia-based artist Rosemary Luckett uses surreal landscapes to explore relationships between humanity and other living creatures using ink, watercolor and collage.

“Dream’s Edge,” a series of raku works by Pittsburgh artist John Dorinsky, draws literally from the hot embers of a fiery kiln. The embers are seared in a container of combustible material and fused with photographic images from the 1950s.
