NILES — Lia Allison of Fenton Street was painting the inside of her garage when she heard a speeding car — followed by a crash.

When she went to check it out, Allison saw that an older Grand Am and a Chevrolet van had crashed at Fenton Street and Ann Avenue.

Niles police Lt. Jason Holland said a 28-year-old woman in one of the vehicles was dead when police arrived. Her family had not been notified, and he could not release the woman’s name as of 9:45 p.m. Friday .

Holland said the driver, Steven W. Mayberry, 38, of Campbell, ran from the car just after the 6 p.m. crash. Holland said police officers found Mayberry a few blocks away on Mason Street.

Mayberry was placed in the Niles city jail on charges of resisting arrest and a felony hit and skip charge.

Three people in the other car were taken to area hospitals, Holland said. He did not have their names or ages.

The Niles officer said the city’s traffic officers and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were still working on the scene trying to determine what had happened.

He said they believe one of the vehicles crossed the center line to go around cars that were parked along the street for a nearby party. None of those involved in the crash was at the party, he said.

The two vehicles crashed head on, Holland said.
