Twins 8, Tigers 5

DETROIT — Michael Cuddyer and Lew Ford homered and drove in three runs apiece in Minnesota’s victory over Detroit. Cuddyer hit a three-run homer, went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Ford hit a two-run drive and a run-scoring double. Minnesota has won the first two games of the series between the AL Central rivals. Detroit has lost four of its past five. Curtis Granderson, Marcus Thames, and Ivan Rodriguez homered for the Tigers. Kevin Slowey (3-0) outpitched fellow rookie Andrew Miller (3-2) to get the win. Slowey gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings, struck out two and walked one. Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances.

Rangers 5, Red Sox 4

BOSTON — Sammy Sosa hit his 602nd career homer to break a fifth-inning tie, leading Texas and spoiling Josh Beckett’s last start before the All-Star rosters are announced. One day after striking out with the bases loaded in the Rangers’ 2-1 loss, Sosa lined a solo shot off the front row of the Monster Seats to break a 4-4 tie. That deprived Beckett (11-2) of a chance to match C.C. Sabathia as the only 12-game winners in the majors. Beckett gave up five runs and 10 hits in five innings. He coughed up a 4-0 lead by allowing four runs in the fourth, including a two-run double by Brad Wilkerson that was a rude welcome for Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury in his major league debut. Ron Mahay (1-0) earned the victory with two innings of scoreless relief.

Orioles 6, Angels 3

BALTIMORE — Brian Burres took a three-hitter into the eighth inning, Ramon Hernandez hit a three-run homer and Baltimore improved to 6-4 under interim manager Dave Trembley. Kevin Millar drove in two runs and scored twice, and Melvin Mora had his second straight three-hit game for the Orioles. Burres (4-2) gave up three runs, five hits and four walks in 72⁄3 innings, the longest outing of his big league career. Paul Shuey got the last four outs to earn his first save since 2002. Angels starter Bartolo Colon (6-4) allowed three runs, eight hits and two walks in six innings. The right-hander struck out six, including Jay Gibbons and Corey Patterson twice.

White Sox 3, Royals 1, 10 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tadahito Iguchi poked a two-run single into right field with two out in the 10th inning, helping Chicago snap Kansas City’s five-game win streak. Octavio Dotel (0-1) started the 10th and gave up a pinch single to A.J. Pierzynski and hit Scott Podsednik, who reached for the fourth time in the game. With two out, Paul Konerko was walked intentionally, loading the bases. The winner was Matt Bukvich (1-0), who threw one pitch in the ninth. Bobby Jenks pitched the 10th for the White Sox and got his 21st save in 23 opportunities. The loss snapped the Royals’ five-game winning streak, their longest in two years.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 8, Phillies 3

PHILADELPHIA — Carlos Beltran homered twice for the second straight game, leading New York over free-falling Philadelphia. Paul Lo Duca and David Wright also connected, and Jorge Sosa (7-3) pitched five effective innings before he left after straining his left hamstring running to first in the sixth. Pedro Feliciano recorded the final six outs for his first save. Beltran, who finished 4-for-5, gave the Mets a 5-3 lead with a two-run drive off starter J.A. Happ (0-1) in the fifth inning. His solo shot off Ryan Madson in the seventh made it 6-3. It was the fifth time Beltran homered from both sides of the plate. Ryan Howard hit his 19th homer for injury-riddled Philadelphia, which fell six games behind the NL East-leading Mets.

Brewers 13, Cubs 4

CHICAGO — Milwaukee bounced back from a tough defeat, scoring nine runs in the first three innings to make it easy for Ben Sheets (10-3), who had a season-high 11 strikeouts in winning his sixth straight decision. Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for Milwaukee, which finished with 15 hits in ending Chicago’s seven-game winning streak. Prince Fielder had a pair of doubles in the first two innings and three RBIs Saturday as Milwaukee jumped out early against Sean Marshall (4-3). Sheets allowed four runs and six hits with one walk. Milwaukee’s ace is 6-0 in his last seven starts and 9-1 over his last 14.

Braves 6, Marlins 5

MIAMI — Tim Hudson pitched seven innings and Edgar Renteria hit a tie-breaking double in the eighth. Renteria’s double off reliever Armando Benitez (2-4) drove in Willie Harris, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the Braves to their fifth straight win. Atlanta had not won five straight since May 8-12. Hudson (8-5) gave up one run and seven hits, striking out six to win consecutive starts for the first time since May 10 and 15.

Reds 5, Cardinals 1

CINCINNATI — Kyle Lohse (4-10) rebounded from the worst outing of his career with one of his best of the season, pitching into the eighth inning and hitting a sacrifice fly.

Rockies 5, Astros 0

HOUSTON — Jeff Francis allowed three hits in seven innings and Colorado beat its former ace Jason Jennings (1-3) to end an eight-game losing streak. Garrett Atkins drove in two runs, Matt Holliday had an RBI double and the Rockies won for just the fourth time in 13 games.
