Here's a list of various scholarships available for college and college-bound students.
Legislative Scholarship Program: State Sen. Capri S. Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd, announced that more than 500,000 in scholarships is available for students who plan to attend a career or technical college in Ohio. The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools offers these Legislative Scholarship Program awards through the cooperation of Ohio's Business and Trade School without any cost to the state. Students may use the awards for educational programs to obtain a diploma, certificate or associate's degree.
Applicants must possess a "C" or better average in high school in order to be eligible and must submit a completed application form to Cafaro by Feb. 20. Students can obtain application forms from their high school counselors. Call (614) 466-7182 for more information.
Thomas J. Seefred Trust Fund: The trust will award scholarships up to 3,000 to college students ages 18 to 25 who have juvenile diabetes. The student must be completing a standard curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic promise, personal statement, recommendations and financial need. Applications may be obtained from the Web site, www.seefredtrust.org. Canton Lehman High School Alumni Association: The association is accepting requests for scholarship applications from graduates or lineal descendants of a Lehman High School graduate or attendee prior to Lehman's last graduating class of 1976. Applicants must be sponsored by a member of the alumni association. Those requesting an application should enclose a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope and send the request to: Lehman Alumni Association Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 7498, Canton, Ohio 44705-7498. Applications must be returned by May 1.
Richard T. Naples Sr. Education Foundation Inc.: The perpetual fund created by Richard T. Naples Sr. of Niles nine years ago has awarded more than 180 college scholarships in the amount of 500 each. The aid is available to current high school seniors in Trumbull, Mahoning and Stark counties. The funds can be used at institutes for fine and performing arts, trade and vocational schools as well as for traditional colleges and universities. Students can obtain applications from their guidance counselors, and March 31 is the filing deadline.
National Italian American Foundation Awards: March 1 is the deadline for filling an online application for a National Italian American Foundation Scholarship. The program offers nearly 100 annual scholarships ranging from 2,000 to 15,000 to Italian-American students or students of any ethnic background who enroll in Italian-related studies. Junior Achievement: Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, Inc. announced that all high school seniors have the opportunity to enter the "Excellence through Ethics" essay contest sponsored by Deloitte & amp; Touch USA LLP now until March 5. Seniors can log onto the JA Ethics Center at http://studentcenter.ja.org to enter the essay contest. Read the ethical dilemma and compose an original 500-word essay in response. Submit your essay online for the chance to win a 5,000 college scholarship. The contest is open to current U.S. high school seniors with a graduation date of winter 2006 or spring 2007 who have completed one JA class. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one Excellence through Ethics program lesson.
