Record-setters Gardner, Aden are point-oriented

The old saying by fans in the sports world goes something like this: "Records were made to be broken."
They didn't say, however, so many of them could be dissipated so quickly.
Two young girls basketball players stepped into the Mercer County limelight recently with record-shattering performances.
The record breakers were Lakeview High's Sheena Aden, who became the county's all-time leading scorer with 2,113 points, and Sharpsville's Kasey Gardner, who became her school's all-time leader with 1,226 points.
Held by Holloway
Aden, the daughter of Lakeview coach Steve Aden, surpassed the record of Wanda Holloway (2,106), who established the mark for Sharon High in 1980. Holloway was the only four-time first-team all-star selection in the history of Mercer County, and her point total was the highest for any player, boy or girl, in county history.
Aden, who will play at Pitt-Johnstown, led Lakeview to a 12-1 record.
Gardner has been a hard worker over her four-year career and her attitude has impressed her coach, Jeff Hanley.
The old Sharpsville record was held by Mary Jo (Vodenichar) Staunch, who scored 1,215 points.
Gardner's father, Tim, was a football and basketball standout at Reynolds High who also played at Youngstown State.
This has been a tremendous season for Mercer County girls teams, with plenty of firepower.
Powerful Tigers
Coach Gene Sarazen's Sharon team has been a real power this season, rolling along to a 6-0 league mark and 13-1 overall. The lone loss was a 47-44 overtime setback to Lakeview.
The spark of Sarazen's offense has been Brittany Csatlos, who has battled her way up the ladder of success throughout her career. She recently reached 1,460 career points, surpassing Kennedy Catholic's Andrea Fridley (1,454) and Suzy Bowser of West Middlesex (1,450).
Remember when Nick Cannone was running around the hardwood at Farrell in the heyday of the Steelers?
Well, Nick has stuck with the game that he loves and recently notched his 300th career victory as his Hickory High Hornets scored a 58-47 triumph over the Titusville Rockets. The milestone came in his 20th year of coaching that included stints at Farrell, Wilmington and Hickory. That 300th career win does not include a stint when he was coach of the West Middlesex High girls team.
