KINSMAN -- Two Joseph Badger High School students are among more than 20 young people nominated to military service academies by U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette of Madison, R-14th. John Miller was nominated to West Point, and Tyler McNeely was nominated to the Air Force Academy. LaTourette is able to submit up to 10 nominations for each vacancy at the various academies.
Open house at Mooney
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St., will host an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 4. The event will conclude Mooney's Catholic Schools Week celebration. Members of the faculty and administration will be available to explain the school's curriculum, detail new course offerings for the 2007-08 school year and discuss financial aid opportunities. Students will be featured in various demonstrations and projects. Guided tours will be provided. Information on registration procedures will be available, and new student registrations will be accepted.
The school's alumni association will sponsor a tuition drawing featuring four 500 scholarship prizes. Cardinal Mooney Home and School Association will host a spaghetti dinner in the school cafeteria from noon to 4 p.m. Takeouts will be available.
Mount Carmel registration
NILES -- Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 309 Rhodes Ave., is holding registration for the 2007-08 school year from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. An open house has been scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. For information, call (330) 652-5547 during school hours.
Information night
GIRARD -- St. Rose School, 61 E. Main St., will present a meeting about the school including information on Ed Choice Vouchers at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Liberty Library meeting room, 415 Church Hill-Hubbard Road. Current E.J. Blott elementary pupils and incoming kindergartners who are assigned to E.J. Blott are eligible to apply for tuition vouchers. Space is limited to the first 40 attendees. Additional informational meetings will be held in February.
St. Rose School is accepting applications from families in the E.J. Blott (Liberty) Elementary School and other schools who are eligible for Ed Choice vouchers. Incoming kindergartners scheduled to attend these designated schools also are eligible for Ed Choice vouchers.
Kindergarten screening is planned the week of Feb. 5 at the school.

College summit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Salvation Army College Summit with the theme "Let's Shape the Future Today" is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave. Sponsors are the Salvation Army, Youngstown State University's Undergraduate Admissions Office and the Educators and Community Helping Hispanics Onward Inc. St. Charles registration
BOARDMAN -- Registration for St. Charles School, 7325 Westview Drive, is planned from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 5-7 in the school lobby on a first-come, first-serve basis. Siblings of children who are pupils are registered through the school. The following materials are needed for registration: Copy of birth certificate, copy of baptismal certificate, immunization records, Social Security number, 30 nonrefundable registration fee, proof of child custody (if applicable) and a copy of the child's last report card from previous school (first through sixth grades only). Preschool story time
WARREN -- Champion Central Elementary School will hold a preschool story time for 4- and 5-year-olds who reside in the district but who are not enrolled in kindergarten. Children must be 4 years old by Jan. 1, 2007, to attend. Sessions are planned from 10 to 10:30 and 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays with the first session planned Feb. 6 and the last, March 27, at the school, 5759 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Shirley Moy, librarian, will conduct the sessions that will also include art projects and a snack.
Open-enrollment meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown City School District will hold parental information meetings on intradistrict open enrollment for the 2007-08 year. Meetings planned are: 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Volney Rogers Junior High School cafeteria; 10 a.m. Friday at Irene Ward Building (board room), 20 W. Wood St.; 2:30 p.m. Friday at Athena School of Excellence for Girls cafeteria; 2:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Hayes Middle School cafeteria; and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at P. Ross Berry Middle School cafeteria. Applications will be available or may be obtained at Youngstown Board of Education office of attendance, Room 110, 20 W. Wood St. Deadline to submit applications is Feb. 28.
Scholastic book fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Christian School, 4401 Southern Blvd., will hold a scholastic book fair Monday through Friday. Special activities will be Donuts with Dad from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, when fathers may visit the book fair, and Family Fun Night from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday with face painting and cookie decorating.
Founders Day Brunch
BOARDMAN -- Boardman Council PTA will be holding a Founders Day Brunch at 11 a.m. Feb. 13 at Antone's Banquet Center on Market Street to commemorate the founding of PTA in 1879. The cost is 16 per person. This year's Hall of Fame Inductee will be honored at the brunch, and the 2007-08 slate of Council PTA officers will be announced. Reservations are due by Friday and can be made by calling Boardman Council PTA 2nd Vice President Ruthann Bertolini at (330) 629-2639.
