Grant to help seniors
LISBON -- The Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority has received 383,000 in federal funds to help people stay in its units rather than more costly assisted-living facilities or nursing homes.
Tom Snow, the agency's director, told the Columbiana County commissioners Wednesday that the funds are from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and will be spent over three years.
The money will in part be used to hire a worker who will help the residents in the authority's 479 units in seven locations in Wellsville and East Liverpool.
The authority rents apartments in the northern portion of the county. Residents in those units aren't eligible.
Snow said the worker will help the elderly in the southern portion of the county get to the doctor or with other needs. Helping those people who are living independently will cost less than having to provide the services in care facilities.
