John Daly won the 2004 tournament, beating Luke Donald and Chris Riley on the first hole of a playoff. Daly hit a 100-foot bunker shot to 4 inches to set up his winning birdie. ... Phil Mickelson won his hometown tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001. He's coming off a 45th-place tie last week in his season debut in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. ... The final two rounds will be played on the South Course, site of the 2008 U.S. Open. ... The FBR Open is next week in Scottsdale, Ariz., followed by the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Roberts, the MasterCard Championship winner the previous week, then won The ACE Group Classic to become the first Champions Tour player to open a season with three straight victories.Last week: Hale Irwin won the season-opening MasterCard Championship, beating Jim Thorpe and Tom Kite by five strokes for his tour-record 45th victory and first in 15 months. Coming off his first winless season in 12 years, the 61-year-old Irwin closed with a 7-under 65 for a 23-under 193 total. He's sixth-oldest winner in tour history.Notes: Irwin won the 2005 tournament to become the first player to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event five straight times. Casey finished at 17-under 271 for his eighth European tour title.Notes: Ernie Els, the 2005 winner, tops the field along with Stenson, Casey, Retief Goosen, Michael Campbell, Stuart Appleby, Chris DiMarco, Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood. ... Qatar, a little smaller than Connecticut, is on an oil-rich Persian Gulf peninsula off eastern Saudi Arabia. ... The European tour be in the United Arab Emirates next week, then will rejoin the Asian circuit for events in Malaysia and Indonesia. The Asian Tour will be in Manila next week for the Philippine Open.
