Baby unattended in bathtub dies

YOUNGSTOWN — A 7 1/2-month-old Youngstown girl who was left unattended in a bathtub Friday night has died, city police confirmed late Monday.

Kha-Niyah Williams had been flown by helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital and had been listed in critical condition there, and died on Monday, said Capt. Mike Vodilko.

The child’s mother, Shareitta Buffington, 21, has told police she left the baby in the tub with a 2-year-old and went to get baby soap in a bedroom.

When she returned, the baby was face-down in the water, a police report says.

The Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office filed a felony charge of endangering children against the child’s mother.

Police said Monday evening that she has not been arrested. Police also said there was no additional charge filed against her at that time.
