YOUNGSTOWN -- An opportunity to experience Shakespeare's "Hamlet" up close and personal is being offered to area high school students. Youngstown State University's theater program is inviting students to participate in a hands-on drama workshop, sponsored by the student theater organization Alpha Psi Omega. It is scheduled for March 1, in conjunction with the University Theater production of "Hamlet." The workshop will cover topics such as improvisational Elizabethan acting; stage combat; Shakespeare appreciation; and scenery, lighting and costume design. Theater faculty and staff and members of the cast and crew of "Hamlet" will conduct all workshop sessions. The cost of 8 per student includes all workshops, lunch, and a complete performance of "Hamlet." Enrollment will be limited, so early registration is recommended. 'Proof' at YSU theater
YOUNGSTOWN -- Blackbox Productions, the student theater troupe at YSU, will present the drama "Proof" from Jan. 25-28 at Spotlight Arena Theater in Bliss Hall. The story involves Catherine, a 25-year-old woman who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father. After his death she must discern how much of her father's madness and his genius will she inherit. Noelle Nackino of Boardman is the director. The cast includes Shawn Lockaton of Girard, Angela Medaugh of Dresden and Nicole Dionisio and Richard Bell of Austintown. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Jan. 25-27 and 3 p.m. Jan. 28. Tickets are 5 for adults and 3 for Youngstown State University students, faculty and staff and senior citizens.
Irish music and dance
SHARON, Pa. -- Live Irish music and dance will be featured at the seventh annual Night of Irish Music, 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at St. Joseph Social Hall, Case Avenue. The event is sponsored by local chapters of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Sharon Knights of Columbus. The event is in a new location this year, which will provide more seating and parking. Dancers from the Burke School of Irish Dance will be featured as well as local and regional Irish musicians, singers and pipers. Admission is free. Food and legal beverages will be available as well as coffee and tea.
'Dream Coat' in Lisbon
LISBON -- "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" will be presented by Stage Left Players' High School Players this weekend at the Outreach Center, 234 E. Lincoln Way. Curtain times are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Jan. 26; and 2 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 28. Tickets are 12 for adults and 10 for seniors and students, and can be bought in advance by calling (330) 424-5093. This Broadway musical was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Daniel Huston plays the role of Joseph. Conner Bezeredi, Bret Cowden, Carly Ellis, Christina Fonner, Jessica Hall, Donnie Hofmeister, Kacie Honeywell, Nathan Kuhns, Rachel Matthews, Doug Mondell, Levi Ridgeway, Kasey Sanor, Ryan Sowards, Ben Spencer, Jordan Spencer, Mike Spencer, Courtney Stewart, Kellie Stewart, Tyler Stouffer, Kedron Taylor, Trixie Taucher, Jacob Ward, Aimee Williamson, Reed Worth and Cassie Utt round out the cast.
