Voucher program may hurt Liberty school

LIBERTY — A change in the rules by the state Legislature in December put Liberty’s E.J. Blott Elementary into the state school voucher program — a move that could result in a substantial loss of pupils this fall.

Three area private schools are interested in attracting disgruntled pupils from Blott, which has had some academic problems, for the 2007-08 school year.

Akiva Academy on Gypsy Lane in Youngstown, St. Patrick School in Hubbard and St. Rose School in Girard have all made it known they are welcoming applications from Blott children.

Liberty Superintendent Lawrence C. Prince said the district doesn’t know yet how many of the 550 pupils at Blott it might lose.
