Learning with a surround-sound system

POLAND — The voices of second-graders Jake Jeges, Kieran Burk, Tony Schiaro and Nate Nord reverberate through the classroom at Poland Union Elementary School.

The boys, all 8 and in Linda Watts’ class, take turns reading to their fellow pupils using an acoustic learning system.

The device resembles a small tape recorder and broadcasts the voice of whomever speaks into it through four speakers positioned in the classroom. “We have them in all of our kindergarten and first-grade classes and two second-grade classrooms,” said Carmella Smallhoover, Union’s principal.
