STRUTHERS -- The Struthers City School District will again have open enrollment for the 2007-08 school year. Applications must be picked up in person at the board of education office, 99 Euclid Ave., between Monday and Friday next week. Completed applications must be returned in person beginning Tuesday. Applications will be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The filing deadline is 3 p.m. March 16. Applicants will receive written notice of the enrollment decision during the first full week of April. Any child living in Ohio is eligible to apply, except those who will be attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the first time.
Free ACLU event set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The ACLU of Ohio is screening "The ACLU Freedom Files: Dissent/Free Speech" at 7 p.m. March 8 at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center's James Gallery. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP to contact@acluohio.org or call (216) 472-2200. An audience discussion led by Carrie Davis, ACLU of Ohio staff attorney, will follow the 30-minute film screening.
Howland open enrollment
HOWLAND -- Applicants for open enrollment for the 2007-08 school year can be picked up by a parent or guardian only from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. March 12-16 at the superintendent's office at 8200 South St. next to the middle school. The applications can be returned from March 13-16. Kindergarten and grades eight, nine and 10 are closed to open enrollment for the next school year.
Limits set at Hubbard
HUBBARD -- A limited number of pupils will be accepted for open enrollment for the 2007-08 school year. No applications will be given out for grades seven, nine, 10, 11 or 12 as these grades are full. Applications may be picked up at the Hubbard Board of Education Office, 150 Hall Ave., between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. beginning Thursday until March 16. All applications must be completed and returned by 3:30 p.m. March 19.
SRU will air Gore film
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," a film about global warming, will be aired at Slippery Rock University at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium. The university's Commonwealth Association of Students and the English department are sponsoring the free screening, which is open to the public.
Computer classes offered
HOWLAND -- Beginning and advanced computer classes are being offered at the Howland SCOPE building, 8273 High St., beginning March 5. Beginning classes will run from 9-10:30 a.m. for five sessions at 5 each. Advanced classes will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon for five sessions at 5 each. Statewide essay winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Nadine Fountain, a fifth-grader at Westside Upper Elementary School, has won a statewide essay contest on freedom sponsored by the Ohio Education Association and Clear Channel Radio. Nadine is the daughter of Amy Shannon and Will Fountain III of Youngstown. The essay addressed the topic, "What does freedom mean to me as we honor Black History Month?" She will be presented with 50, the book "There Comes a Time" and tickets for her entire class to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Nadine's essay was submitted with others from her class by her teacher, Peggy Palma, after the pupils studied writing and history in Palma's class.
Mock trial team fares well
LORDSTOWN -- The Lordstown High School Mock Trial Team scored well at Mock Trial District Competition held at the Trumbull County Family Court and advanced to regional competition in Cleveland. The seven-member team is coached by teacher Terry Armstrong; Atty. Phil Vigorito serves as its legal advisor. Each year, the Ohio Center for Law Related Education creates a fictitious case involving a constitutional issue for high school students to argue on both sides of the case. Local judges and attorneys volunteer their time to hear the case arguments and render decisions.
MCCTC team to compete
CANFIELD -- A team of 11 students from the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center will compete in the fifth annual Gordon Food Service ProStart Student Invitational on Monday at the North America Pizza & amp; Ice Cream Show in the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The event, only for Ohio ProStart schools, is the premier competition for high school culinary arts students in Ohio. More than 150 students making up 36 teams from 14 schools will compete in two events, including a Culinary Competition and a Quiz Bowl. The Culinary Competition showcases each team's best recipes. The Quiz Bowl uses a "Jeopardy"-style format to test students' knowledge related to the food service industry. The winning team from each event will be sent all travel-related expenses paid to the National ProStart Student Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., on April 20-22. Members of the Mahoning County team are: Michael Terry, Jody Richmond, Ailis Murphy, Kyle Getsy, Kevin Mason, Nicole Dorinski, Jamie Merrell, Carley Michaels, Heather Patzak, Daniel Kamel and Joseph Setter.
'Missing Link' visit
YOUNGSTOWN -- The "Missing Link" program visited Taft Elementary School on Thursday to present a reading book to each of the school's 85 kindergarten pupils. The program, now in its 13th year in Youngstown, provides children with books they can take home and the Taft children will get another book each month. The program needs additional "gently used" books to continue its efforts. Books should be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 235 Wick Ave., and marked to the attention of Tom Gilmartin Sr.
Looking at Heartland
COLUMBIANA -- Heartland Christian School, 28 Pittsburgh St., will hold an "Investigation Day" on March 8 for families interested in taking a closer look at its educational offerings. The school has 330 pupils in preschool through the 12th grade and was accredited last fall by the Association of Christian Schools International.
