Small league, big results for Bero
Mom and pop grocery stores may be a thing of the past, but mom and pop bowling leagues still have something to offer.
Consider the 300 game rolled by Andrew Bero in the 20-person GCU Sunday Mixed League at Holiday recently.
Although Bero engages in a noisier and more competitive league elsewhere on Wednesdays, it takes a backseat to the simple enjoyment of casual bowling on Sundays.
He's proof that it's OK to think small for league size, but not for game scores.
The 24-year-old New Middletown resident finished with a 716 series Jan. 28 after rolling his first 300.
Bero has GCU's top average of 205.
The last perfect game registered in the Greek Catholic Union No. 252 League, was in October 2005 by Dave Pavlich.
Bero anchors the Komara Jewelers team, whose other members are his brother, Dave Bero, Amanda Thompson, Sarah Thompson and Theresa Swindler.
Komara won GCU's first half and isn't too far behind the standings.
Andrew attends Youngstown State and works at Catullo Meats.
Umstead, Clipse sharp
Brian Umstead's 300-779 led Ron Haus Auto Classic at Camelot Feb. 14, followed by Dan Clipse's 289-777.
Teri Haefke and Fran Miller matched high games of 267, but Haefke finished with 777 for three and 1,023 for four to lead Wedgewood Ladies Trio.
Haefke's 755 was tops among G.E. Mixed bowlers at Wedgewood Feb. 5, while Mark Truman's 299 was top single. Willie Provitt's 744 was G.E.'s top men's set.
Haefke also had 270-710 in Thursday Night Matchplay at Amron.
Tonja Cowart's 246 in Howgren Heating & amp; Cooling at Holiday was tops among women Jan. 26 and Melissa Zurvitz's 243 led Ladies Variety at Holiday Jan. 31.
DePizzo Sausage won Kernan Insurance Classic's third quarter at West Side.
How's this for alliteration: Duane (Beatty), Dennis (Lowry) and Dick (Lowry) had St. Dominic Men's top scores at Holiday Feb. 18.
