MILL CREEK METROPARKS March calendar



Activities planned this month at Mill Creek MetroParks facilities:
March 1-31: Registration for Children's Summer Vegetable Garden. The hands-on gardening program is for children who have completed second grade. Each child will tend a 3-by-10-foot garden throughout the summer at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield. Horticulture activities will add to the fun. Classes meet April 21 and May 12 from 9-11 a.m. Beginning June 13, children will meet every Wednesday morning through Aug. 22. Final class will be Sept. 29. Scholarships are available. March 1, 8, 15, 22 & amp; 29: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. Yoga at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Maintain a healthy outlook and reduce stress with Heidi Suraci as she teaches a blend of energizing yoga styles. Students of all levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes. March 3: 10 a.m. Book discussion, "The River of Doubt," by author Candice Millard. Read this powerful work of nonfiction and join the naturalist-led discussion. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
March 3: 1-4:30 p.m. The ancient tradition of decorating eggs called Pysanky is practiced throughout Central and Eastern Europe, but the motifs and colors change between regions. Participants will be able to create their own decorated eggs in this introductory workshop taught by Mary Soldo. Registration and fee are due at Ford Nature Center by March 1. Some materials will be covered by a workshop fee. Held at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Fee: 12.50 R, 15 NR.
March 3: 7-9 p.m. Staff from Youngstown State University's Planetarium will help you appreciate tonight's lunar eclipse astronomical event. Watch the earth shadow the moon through the university's telescope. Bring your own binoculars if you wish. Families can participate in a hands-on moon activity. Call Ford Nature Center to register. March 4: 9-11 a.m. Restoration Yoga promotes heightened awareness and self-healing through specialized breathing techniques and postures. Dress comfortably and bring your yoga mat and a favorite quote. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: 20.
March 4: 2 p.m. Photography by Tom Jones. Jones, an accomplished photographer from Peninsula, Ohio, will help us kick off this year's photo exhibit with two presentations. His multiple projector slide programs are accompanied with music. Held at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

March 7: 9 a.m. Health and Wellness Walk. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroParks Farm. Moderate difficulty, 2 or 4 miles.
March 7: 11 a.m. to noon or 1-2 p.m. or 10. Each preschooler ages 3 to 5 with an adult companion will make a springtime window garden by adding whimsical decorations to a flowerpot of sprouting hyacinths. There will be snacks and a story. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: 5 R, 7 NR.
March 8: 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Two-year-olds and their adult companions will meet a friendly duck, experience story time and enjoy a variety of interactive games. Call (330) 740-7107 to register.

March 13: 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell, a potter whose work often reflects a botanical theme, will teach students to construct a ceramic bowl with rolled and textured clay leaves. March 13: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Proportion and balance are key elements in the art of flower arranging. Deby Clark will demonstrate these design techniques as she guides each participant in creating an arrangement. Preparation of flowers and greens will be reviewed. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. March 15: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fellows Riverside Gardens, Ohio State University Extension Mahoning County, and the Mahoning Valley Landscape & amp; Nursery Association will sponsor a spring horticulture clinic. March 17: 10 a.m. Health and Wellness Walk. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty with hills, 3 miles.
March 18: 2 p.m. Learn about the American Indian way of life from Red Tail (Stephen Rickard), an adopted member of the Sioux, the Shoshone, the Flathead and the Blackfeet tribes. He'll share slides of traditional life, including food preparation and the medicinal uses of plants that are still being used today by the Intermountain Tribes of Montana. You'll also hear the Shoshone story of the Courting Flute and explore the importance of music in the everyday life of native tribes. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
March 21: 9 a.m. Health and Wellness Walk. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at Kirk Road. Moderate difficulty, 2 or 4 miles.
March 23: 8:30-10 a.m. Start the morning with a brisk walk in Fellows Riverside Gardens. Return to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a light breakfast and learn about the significance of plant roots. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: 6 R, 8 NR.
March 24: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Children's Book Fair at Fellows Riverside Gardens for children and their families. Altrusa Club of Youngstown, Mill Creek MetroParks, PBS 45/49, and The Public Library of Youngstown & amp; Mahoning County are sponsoring this event featuring storytellers, illustrators, book characters, celebrity readers, cooking demonstrations and many activities for children.
March 25: 2 p.m. Health and Wellness Walk. Meet at Lanterman's Mill parking lot. Moderate difficulty with steps, 2 miles.
March 27: 7 p.m. John Ritzenthaler, Ohio Audubon Society director of Habitat Conservation, will present "Why IBAs [Important Bird Areas] are Important to You." Social time begins at 6:30 p.m.; program begins at 7 p.m. For information, call (330) 783-6287. Held at MetroParks Farm.
March 29: 6:30-8 p.m. Children ages 6 and up with their adult companions will learn fun facts about carrots. Bake and decorate a carrot cake to take home along with the recipe and carrot seeds. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: 7 R, 10 NR.
March 31: 11:30 a.m. Easter Eggstravaganza, the area's largest Easter egg hunt. This spring celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. sharp as children ages 4-10 dash for candy, toys and prizes. There will be an area for children ages 2 and 3. The raw egg toss for adults follows immediately after the hunt. Held rain or shine at the Wick Recreation Area.

Weller Gallery: March 3-April 8. Nature Photography Exhibit. Annual exhibit that highlights the talents of amateur photographers. Nine categories fill the gallery for your viewing pleasure.
Melnick Museum: Through April. "Crossing the Creeks: Mill Creek Park's Steel Bridges." Scenic memories of Mill Creek Park usually include its bridges. The Suspension Bridge is the best known of the metal bridges. Over the years, visitors have called it by many names such as the Castle Bridge, White Bridge, Silver Bridge and Cinderella Bridge.
