Man is prize finalist
HADLEY, Pa. -- A western Pennsylvania man has learned he is the running for the 10 million Publishers Clearing House prize. Fred Spalding of Hadley, Mercer County, was notified this week he is one of 210 people nationwide who have been chosen as finalists for the prize. According to a Publishers Clearing House news release, Spalding has won at least 1,000. The 10 million winner will be surprised Wednesday by the prize patrol.
CDBG grant delay
MERCER, Pa. -- Commissioners have again delayed awarding the county's 2007 Community Development Block Grant allocation because they have not yet received a definite figure on how much the county will get. Commissioners had a public hearing Feb. 8 on the grant, which had been estimated by the Mercer County Regional Planning Commission at 316,000 based on anticipated cuts in the amount received in 2006.
At that time, commissioners delayed action on the grants until Feb. 22 because Commissioner Brian Beader was on vacation Feb. 8. But on Thursday, Commissioner Olivia Lazor said the March 1 deadline for a decision on awarding the grants has been pushed back because of delays on the federal level. The commissioners face difficult decisions on the grants because the requests exceed anticipated money available by about 128,000. Commissioners receive CDBG funding to be distributed among the county's less populated areas.
Candidate disqualified
LISBON -- An eight-way race for Wellsville village council has become a seven-way race. The Columbiana County Board of Elections on Friday dropped one candidate from the upcoming primary.
John J. Cataldo of Wellsville fell one valid signature short of the 50 valid signatures to run for council, according to Lois Gall, director of the elections board. He had 56 signatures on his petition to run but seven were ruled invalid. The filing deadline for candidates was Thursday. Cataldo was one of eight candidates for council. There are four positions open this year.
