Diebler sets state mark

UPPER SANDUSKY (AP) -- With a simple layup on Friday night, Upper Sandusky's Jon Diebler became Ohio's alltime prep scoring leader.
The 6-foot-7 senior, who has signed to play college ball at Ohio State, hit a layup to break the existing mark of 2,958 points set by New Concord John Glenn's Jay Burson from 1981-85. The shot came with 2:51 left on the clock and brought him to 44 points in the game -- one more than he needed to break the record.
Diebler, averaging 42.6 points a game, came into the contest against Norwalk with 2,916 points in his career and 810 for the season.
The Rams (16-3) were ranked 10th in Division II in the final regular-season Associated Press poll released Tuesday. They won the state championship two years ago when Diebler was a sophomore and his brother Jake was the starting point guard. Jake is now a sophomore at Valparaiso, coached by Homer Drew.
Diebler scored 28 points last Friday in a 100-73 win over Tiffin Columbian and then came back with 41 points in a 93-74 victory over Sycamore Mohawk on Saturday night, leaving him 42 points behind Burson.
A quick and elusive 6-0 guard, Burson starred at John Glenn from 1981-1985. The son of longtime Muskingum College coach Jim Burson, he also went on to play at Ohio State, where he lettered for four years while scoring 1,756 points.
Burson was present to watch Diebler break his record.
According to records compiled by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Diebler began the season with 2,106 points -- the 27th best career total in the state.
While scoring 810 points in his first 19 games, he passed such luminaries as longtime NBA star Jimmy Jackson (Toledo Macomber, 2,328 points), current Ohio State starter Jamar Butler (Lima Senior, 2,412), former Cincinnati and current Kansas State coach Bob Huggins (Conotton Valley, Indian Valley South, 2,438), legendary Ohio State and NBA performer Jerry Lucas (Middletown, 2,460) and Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James (Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 2,646).
