Boardman and Canfield teams earn All-Ohio status
Both schools had relays finish seventh at Saturday's state meet.
CANTON -- Boardman High's 200-yard freestyle relay broke a school record with a time of 1 minute, 27.40 seconds to finish seventh at Saturday's state swimming meet, earning automatic All-America status and becoming the first relay in school history to finish as first team All-Ohioans.
Also, Canfield's boys team put a relay in the top eight for the second straight year as the Cardinals' 400 free relay placed seventh with a time of 3:13.95.
The top eight in each event make the medal stand and earn first team All-Ohio status.
"We improved and swam faster in evening and that's what you want," said Boardman coach Terry O'Halloran. "The guys had a chance to wear a medal and be up on the awards platform and get their picture taken and be in next year's program, which was great.
"To be swimming with the top eight teams in the state of Ohio is pretty exciting stuff."
Coming up big
Boardman's relay team of junior Conner O'Halloran, senior Kenny Drombosky, senior Brian Worhatch and junior Mike Barringer swam nearly a second faster than their morning preliminary time. Barringer anchored the relay with a personal-best split time of 21.67. Drombosky and Worhatch also had personal-best split times.
"Mike did a phenomenal job," said O'Halloran. "Conner did not have a great morning but he bounced back in the evening and swam pretty well."
Both teams were seventh coming out of the morning's preliminary race. Canfield's relay team of James Hunter, Jordan Graham, Garrett Trebilcock and Eric Davis swam slightly slower than their morning time (3:13.85). The Cardinals placed seventh in the 200 free relay last year and 13th in the 400 free relay.
Boardman placed 13th in the 200 free relay at last year's state meet and 10th in the 200 medley relay.
Earlier in the day, Davis placed 19th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.47, while O'Halloran finished 21st (48.70). O'Halloran was fourth in the 50 freestyle on Friday's first day, while Davis was 15th in the 100 butterfly on Friday.
Lisbon sophomore Ben Haren placed 22nd in the 100 backstroke on Saturday with a time of 54.64.
On the girls side, Mooney junior Morgan McCarty placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.88. She was the only area girls competitor on Saturday.
