KENT -- Junior Bethany Anderson provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor campionships in the weight throw and set a school record for the third consecutive week at the Kent State Tune-Up Saturday.
Anderson posted a distance of 63 feet, 7 inches to become the first YSU female thrower to hit the qualifying mark of 62-4. According to trackshark.com, she ranks 22nd in Division I.
Anderson added a sixth-place finish in the shot put (40-81/4) while Lindsey Hill placed fourth (42-4). Lindsay Cobey finished eighth with a season-best mark of 48-103/4 in the weight throw, and Alexis Hall was 10th (46-31/4).
Aaron Merrill was the top men's finisher with a ninth-place showing in the shot put (49-21/2).
At the Zips Open Friday, Harold Jones was the top YSU finisher with a second-place time of 1 minute, 55.03 seconds, while J.D. Sheppard placed third (1:55.51). Adam Kagarise placed sixth in the 400 (49.83), and Marty Vieth finished sixth in the high jump with a season-best mark of 6-03/4.
Katie Betts finished sixth in the 200 with a season-best time of 26.50. Carly Youlton placed fifth in the long jump (15-83/4). Laura Yamsek and Genevieve Jerome each posted season-best times in the mile. The Penguins will compete at the Horizon League championships Saturday and Sunday.

Canfield High junior Eric Davis earned at-large bids in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly for this weekend's state meet, joining Boardman junior Conner O'Halloran, who also earned an at-large bid in the 100 freestyle.
Both swimmers qualified in four events for the meet, which will take place a C.T. Branin Natatorium Friday and Saturday.
Davis will also compete in the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay, while O'Halloran also advanced in the 50 free, the 200 free relay and the 200 medley relay.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Rayen, Ursuline and Warren Harding won first-round games at the Steel Valley Conference boys freshman basketball tournament Saturday at The Rayen School.
Rayen defeated Warren JFK 46-37, as Jarell Burt scored 19 points. Trumane Jenkins added 16 points for Rayen. JFK was led by Ryan McCollum with 22 points. Ursuline defeated Wilson 47-36. Ursuline was led by Thomas Hammond with 14 points, while Brett Lawrence led Wilson with 10.
Warren Harding defeated Chaney 76-38, as Brandon Johnson scored 14 points and Dom Murray added 13 for Harding. Chaney was led by Antron Naze with 14 points.
The second round will be played Saturday at Rayen. The first game, at 2 p.m., will feature No. 4 seed Rayen against No. 1 seed Mooney. The second game will be No. 2 seed Warren Harding against No. 3 seed Ursuline.

*LUTZ, Fla. -- Tom Watson won the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am for his first professional victory in Florida, closing with a 1-under 70 in cold and windy conditions for a one-stroke margin over Jay Haas and Andy Bean. The round was played in temperatures reaching the low 40s, with 30 mph gusts. Watson, the five-time British Open champion who entered the week 0-for-93 as a pro in Florida, finished at 4-under 209 and earned 240,000 for his ninth career Champions Tour title. Haas shot a 69, and Bean closed with a 72.
*ADELAIDE, Australia -- Scott Sterling won the Jacob's Creek Open, closing with a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over Australia's David Lutterus in the event sanctioned by the Nationwide and Australasian tours. Sterling finished at 12-under 276 on the Kooyonga course and earned 108,000 for his first Nationwide Tour victory. Lutterus closed with a 72.
*JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Finland's Mikko Ilonen shot a 1-under-70 for a one-stroke victory in the Indonesian Open, sanctioned by the European and Asian tours. Ilonen had a 9-under 275 total on the Damai Indah course. Filipino star Frankie Minoza (71), Australia's Andrew Tampion (69) and India's Shiv Kapur (67) tied for second.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Natalie Coughlin and Michael Phelps dominated the Missouri Grand Prix again Sunday night, each winning a pair of races in the final major competition before next month's world championships in Australia. Coughlin set an American pool record in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 58 seconds. Coughlin added a win in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 25.22,
Phelps won the 200 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. Phelps had to come from behind in the medley race, overtaking second-place finisher Ous Mellouli in the final 25 meters. He finished in 4:11.3. Phelps also won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.47. In the men's 200 breaststroke, Eric Shanteau upset Longhorn Aquatics teammate and world-record holder Brendan Hansen.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Defending champion Andy Murray won his second career title, neutralizing Ivo Karlovic's big serve to win a thrilling SAP Open final 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Sunday.
