Teen Viglio shows it's all in the family
If your grandmother is a member of the Youngstown Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame, what are the chances of being good yourself?
Teen-ager Vince Viglio answered that question on Feb. 10 with his first 300 game in Camelot Majors.
Viglio's series of 713 was his second in a month. The 14-year-old's first was 717, rolled Dec. 30, also in Majors. Viglio's Four Stooges teammates are cousin A.J. Viglio, Joe DiLoreto and Tyler Hupp.
The Austintown Middle School eighth-grader carries a 198 average in Majors.
"I thought it was quite an accomplishment for a 14-year-old," said Vince's grandmother, Dolly Ponzi, who was also the first woman inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame for bowling.
Viglio has been bowling since age 6, starting at the bumper level at Camelot.
"He's gotten better every year," Ponzi said of Vince, whose average in September was 183. "He's improved at least 10 pins a year," Ponzi said, then added, "and his [Bob Viglio's] wallet has decreased," when prodded by Vince's father.
Vince Viglio has won and placed in various Youngstown Junior Bowling Association categories in 2005.
He won all-events in prep boys with 1742; he placed second in AA boys with Joe DeLoreto; Vince and his sister, Katie, won A mixed and Viglio's 629 was high set actual in prep boys.
"His dad and I are like his coaches," Ponzi said.
Vince will be in a Pepsi qualifier in Warren on March 4.
