Spartans advance in two events

Canfield's Garrett Trebilcock earned an automatic berth in the 200 IM.
CLEVELAND -- Boardman's 200-yard medley relay team set a school record and junior Conner O'Halloran swam a personal best time in the 50 freestyle as the Spartans advanced to next week's state meet in two events at Friday's district swimming meet at Cleveland State University.
The relay team of O'Halloran, Mike Barringer, Brian Worhatch and Kenny Drombosky finished third in the event with a time of 1:38.99, breaking the previous mark of 1:39.42 set in 2003.
The Spartans also advanced to the state meet in the 200 medley relay last season.
Tenth off first
O'Halloran placed third in the 50 free with a time of 21.69 -- just a tenth of a second off first place -- to advance to the state meet for the first time in an individual event.
Canfield freshman Garrett Trebilcock placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.14 to earn an automatic berth. The top four in each advance to state. Several others are in contention for at-large berths based on times around the state.
Canfield's Eric Davis finished fifth in the 100 butterfly with a personal-best time of 51.98.
Worhatch placed ninth in the 100 butterfly (53.29) while Barringer was 14th in the 200 IM (2:05.16).
"We were pleased with getting the school record in the medley relay, especially since it was the first event of the day," said Boardman coach Terry O'Halloran. "We're hoping to go even faster next week and get in the top eight at the state meet [to earn first team all-Ohio honors]."
Boardman was in fifth place after one day of competition while Canfield was in seventh. Akron Firestone was in first.
Girls
On the girls side, Canfield freshman Emily King placed 11th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.95. Canfield's 200 medley relay team of King, Jackie Nentwick, Lauren Gessner and Margaret Matavich placed 16th (1:56.51).
On Thursday, Springfield's Kacie Jaric finished second in the Div. II district diving competition with 367.30 points to advance to the state meet, one of three local divers to do so.
Poland freshman Trish Vallinger was third (335.25) and her senior teammate, Sarah Weigel, was sixth with 325.80 points. The top six divers qualified for next week's meet. Bay Village Bay freshman Nikki Craft was first with 494.05 points.
Poland senior Julie Mastervich placed ninth (279.20).
The swimming meet concludes today. Next week's state meet is at C.T. Branin Natatorium at Canton McKinley High School.
