Motion rescinded because of possible conflict

NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees rescinded a motion this week that they passed in January to avoid a potential conflict of interest.
In January, trustees had approved a motion to pay 1,000 to Buckeye Regional Training Center for CPR classes. However, trustees were not aware at the time that township EMS captain Karen Philibin was co-owner of the business. Officials would not comment further except to say the prosecutor's office is handling it.
Philibin said that she and township EMT volunteer Phil Goings are co-owners of BRCT Inc., which provides CPR training to nursing homes, schools and businesses including GM Lordstown. She said the business lists her home address, 9780 Seng Lane, Poland, as an office.
Philibin said Springfield Township Fire Chief Brian Hughes had contacted her about providing CPR recertification to township personnel and that as a result, in January, four township employees received recertification training through the business. The 1,000 fee has not been paid by the township.
Philibin is an Ohio EMS instructor and a national registered paramedic.
She said she is "floored" that there is any problem with BRCT Inc. and has no idea what it is.
