Perry Twp. police chief files to run for sheriff’s position

LISBON — Another Republican law enforcement official is running for Columbiana County Sheriff.

Raymond Stone, the Perry Township police chief, has filed his petition at the county elections board.

Stone could not be reached.

Fellow Republican Daniel N. MacLean of Yellow Creek Township filed his petition last week. He’s former deputy and jail administrator who is now the head of security at the county’s municipal court.

Both will run against Sheriff David Smith, who is seeking re-election. Smith is facing a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Guernsey County. Sheriffs cannot run for office if they have been convicted of a first-degree misdemeanor or a felony.

County Republicans will meet Saturday to endorse some or all of the candidates that may run against Smith.
