Youngstown council repeals raises

YOUNGSTOWN — City council approved the mayor’s recommendation to repeal pay raises for about 100 city workers for 2009 and 2010.

In a unanimous 6-0 vote today, council agreed to freeze the salaries of the employees, including those in management positions, but to keep the 2.5 percent pay raise they are to receive Tuesday.

City council has the authority to give raises to the workers in the future. Council approved 10.3 percent salary increases on Nov. 19 for the employees through Jan. 1, 2010. But Mayor Jay Williams asked council to reconsider saying he wasn’t comfortable with the raises.
