YOUNGSTOWN — A 4-year-old girl told police she unlocked the door at her South Evanston Avenue home and took her 3-year-old sister to the Mahoning Wine Shop because they were hungry.
The 4-year-old girl first went to the Mahoning Avenue store by herself to buy candy on Wednesday morning. She was wearing a coat and socks but no shoes, a clerk told police. A customer watched to make sure the child got home safely.
The clerk called police when, about 15 minutes later, the girl returned with her younger sister to buy more candy. The younger sister had a coat on but no socks or shoes.
When police arrived, the girls’ mother was at the store, saying she fell asleep on the couch and the girls got out without her knowledge.
The case has been turned over to police department’s juvenile division and the county children services agency.
