Red Wings 5, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS — Chris Osgood stopped 20 shots for his 45th career shutout, leading Detroit over St. Louis. Center Valtteri Filppula scored twice to pace the Red Wings, who won for the fifth time in their last six games and improved to 27-7-3 overall. St. Louis, playing in front of its largest home crowd of the season, fell to 18-13-3. The victory served as revenge for Osgood, who improved to 16-2-1. Osgood had an eight-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 3-2 loss in St. Louis on Dec. 20. Brian Rafalski added a goal and two assists for Detroit. Nicklas Lidstrom celebrated a new contract by scoring his fifth of the season for the Red Wings just 2:26 into the game. Jiri Hudler added a goal and an assist.

Senators 5, Sabres 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dany Heatley had a goal and two assists and Martin Gerber made 29 saves as Ottawa beat Buffalo. Wade Redden added a goal and assist for the Senators, who scored three times in the second period. Antoine Vermette, Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson also scored for Ottawa, which has won two straight and eight of its last 10. Jochen Hecht, Brian Campbell and Adam Mair scored for Buffalo, which had its season-high six-game winning streak snapped while losing for just the fifth time in the last 18 games. Sabres goalie Ryan Miller made 19 saves in his ninth straight start.

Islanders 4, Maple Leafs 3, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Mike Comrie scored with 9.6 seconds left in overtime, Wade Dubielewicz made 22 saves in relief of injured Rick DiPietro and New York spoiled Jason Blake’s return. Blake spent parts of six seasons with the Islanders before signing with Toronto during the summer. Comrie also scored in the first period, as did Andy Hilbert and Bill Guerin to stake DiPietro to a lead. But he didn’t come out after intermission because of a knee injury sustained in pregame warmups. Alex Steen and Mark Bell scored in the first period for Toronto, and Steen tied it at 3 in the third period. The Maple Leafs are 1-2-2 in their last five, all on the road.

Rangers 4, Hurricanes 2

NEW YORK — Jaromir Jagr scored twice to end a goal-scoring slump and Brendan Shanahan set up a pair of third-period power-play goals to help New York beat Carolina. Chris Drury and Dan Girardi also scored for the Rangers, who snapped a three-game losing streak, winning for only the third time in the last 11 games. Scott Walker and Eric Staal scored for Carolina, which had won 3-of-4. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 20 saves.

Capitals 3, Lightning 2

WASHINGTON — Hours after Bruce Boudreau formally got the job he coveted, the Capitals marked the occasion with a feel-good victory. Matt Bradley scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:53 left, and Washington ended a three-game skid by beating Tampa Bay. David Steckel had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who earlier in the day learned that the team removed the “interim” tag from Boudreau’s title. Washington improved to 8-5-3 under Boudreau, who took over for the fired Glen Hanlon on Thanksgiving. Vincent Lecavalier scored both Tampa Bay goals. The Lightning have lost five of six and are an NHL-worst 3-13-1 on the road.

Stars 8, Wild 3

DALLAS — Brenden Morrow had two goals and Mike Ribeiro matched a career high with his 20th goal and added two assists as Dallas routed Minnesota. Dallas’ Mike Modano extended his goal-scoring record for U.S.-born players with the 518th of his career. Niklas Hagman, Stu Barnes, Jeff Halpern, and Loui Eriksson also scored for the Stars, 7-1 in their last eight games. Pavol Demitra notched two goals, and Aaron Voros had a goal and an assist for the Wild.

Blackhawks 5, Predators 2

CHICAGO — Robert Lang scored two goals in the third period as Chicago won its season-high fourth straight. Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane each had a goal and assist for the Blackhawks. Chicago’s Nikolai Khabibulin was sharp and made 30 saves. Alexander Radulov and Marek Zidlicky scored for Nashville, which had won its previous two games.
