UPMC cancer units lauded

FARRELL, Pa. — The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted three-year approval with commendation to the cancer program at UPMC Horizon.

A facility receives a three-year approval with commendation after an extensive on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor. The surveyor reviews the cancer program’s organization and compliance with numerous standards.

UPMC Horizon currently offers cancer treatment services at both its Shenango Valley and Greenville campuses and plans to open a 14,000- square-foot comprehensive cancer center adjacent to the Womancare Center in Hermitage in 2009.

The new comprehensive cancer center will be the only National Cancer Institutes-designated cancer center in Mercer County.

UPMC Horizon also has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval after a recent unannounced five-day survey at its Greenville and Shenango Valley campuses, the Womancare Center in Hermitage and UPMC Horizon’s network of outpatient centers across Mercer County.
