YOUNGSTOWN — Two men dressed in black robbed the Family Dollar, 2801 Glenwood Ave., Sunday morning and got away with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. The two suspects, one carrying a red umbrella and the other wearing some sort of mask, entered the store and one walked up behind a store clerk who was getting change from a safe. The man demanded money, hit the clerk on the back of the head, then grabbed a bag of money and fled. The victim was able to call 911 and set off the store alarm. The report did not mention if the clerk needed medical attention.

Thief cons woman, 83

YOUNGSTOWN — An 83-year-old woman, who lives in the 1400 block of East Boston Avenue, was the victim of a man she thought was a good Samaritan. The woman told police she let the man, who called himself John Lake, into her home at about 8:09 p.m. Saturday after he knocked at her door and told her black smoke was coming from her house. The man said he was a furnace repairman and could help. While the woman waited in her kitchen, the man stole $100 from her purse along with her identification, Social Security card, credit cards and $400 that was in a dresser drawer, according to police.

Multiple charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Police charged Larry T. Burgess, 19, of Pinehurst Street, with multiple counts after arresting him at 10:50 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of West Princeton Avenue. Police spotted the car Burgess was driving as a vehicle described in a police broadcast and chased it until it pulled into the devil’s strip on Sherwood, where Burgess exited the vehicle, and police chased and caught him. Burgess was charged with aggravated robbery in an incident in the 100 block of Lowell, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, driving under suspension, failure to comply with an order from police and a parole violation. The two victims of the robbery said Burgess pointed a silver handgun at them, but police could not locate it. The car Burgess was driving was stolen in Kent, police said. He was taken to Mahoning County Jail.

Pet first-aid course

BOARDMAN — The first American Red Cross course of 2008 is pet first-aid training from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Mahoning Chapter training facility on Tod Lane here. The course fee of $34 includes training by a certified instructor, a pet first-aid handbook and special pet first-aid kit. The course is for anyone who received a new pet for Christmas as well as any pet lover. It is designed to help the typical dog or cat owner care for and protect their pet. Program about horses

LISBON — A program about developing practices for horses that are economically viable and environmentally friendly will be on Jan. 12. The Equine Environmental and Liability Awareness Program will be at St. George Knights of Columbus Hall, 271 W. Chestnut St., from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s hosted by the Columbiana and Mahoning Soil and Water Conversation Districts, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, the Columbiana County Farm Bureau and the Ohio State Extension-Mahoning County.
