Market gas stations ignore 30-gallon limit

COLUMBUS (AP) — Some supermarket gas stations are looking the other way when it comes to enforcing the 30-gallon limit on discounted gas.

The Columbus Dispatch says in Saturday’s editions that one motorist filled up and then filled two 55-gallon drums.

The newspaper says another pulled up at the pump in a recreational vehicle with a 75-gallon capacity.

Both Giant Eagle and Kroger have incentive programs that provide discounts linked to how much customers spend in their grocery stores.

At Giant Eagle, the discount is 20 cents a gallon for every $50 in store purchases.

At Kroger, the discount goes up to 50 cents a gallon based on how much is spent.

The program at Kroger is designed to reward customers for loyalty, but they could give their rewards cards to someone who isn’t a customer.

Spokesman Dale Hollandsworth says the store doesn’t ask for IDs when cashiers scan the cards.
