BOARDMAN — Darryce Moore’s double-double, coupled with Courtney Schiffauer’s 21 points and eight rebounds helped the Boardman Spartans to an easy, 78-32 victory over the Massillon Jackson Polar Bears in girls high school basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Boardman Gymnasium.

Moore, who also scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, was happy because the win came during Federal League play.

“I thought that I played well this afternoon, but it was the overall effort by the team that made this win special, especially since it was a league game. Massillon Jackson is an excellent team, a group that keeps coming at you no matter what the score reads on the scoreboard,” Moore noted.

Spartan head coach Ron Moschella, while pleased with his team’s offensive display, was quick to laud his defense for their play as well.

“Our zone press wasn’t as effective in the first half but after intermission, we kicked it up a notch and that made me happy. Our kids were more aggressive in the second half,” he stated.

“[Darryce] Moore and [Courtney] Schiffauer played well at both ends of the court, but everyone seemed to contribute to this win. We’re getting better at getting the ball inside and while Schiffauer was triple-teamed early, it was Monica Touvelle’s four goals from beyond the arc that loosened everything up for us.

“Schiffauer was effective in getting the ball inside to Moore and has elevated her game to another level. When you play defense, the offense takes care if itself and were effective in both areas today,” he added.

The Spartans (6-2, 3-1) never trailed as they raced to the early 10-4 lead, that coming on the strength of Touvelle’s 3-pointer, three points by Moore and buckets from both Schiffauer and Emily Abraham.

With Moore scoring nine of her 21 markers in the opening quarter, the Spartans raced to the early 21-8 advantage.

“We’ve just clicked since the Canfield game. We help each other with our inside game, have been effective with our outside game and defensively, it just feels as though we’ve kicked our game up a notch as well,” Schiffauer stated.

With Schiffauer and Touvelle each notching six points in the second period, the Spartans were able to build a comfortable 37-18 cushion at halftime.

Moore then scored seven of Boardman’s first nine points in the third period, adding 10 overall in the quarter which enabled Boardman to stretch their lead to 55-26 with eight minutes remaining.

Missy DeMarinis’ bucket from beyond the arc at 5:52 of the final period gave Boardman a 69-27 lead, and a bucket by Kayleigh Lipke at 2:29 enabled the Spartans to forge their largest lead of the game, 76-29.

The Boardman defense held the Polar Bears (4-5, 1-3) to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters of play, including just six points in the final stanza.

The Spartans canned 26 of 62 shots form the field, including six of 18 from beyond the arc while the Polar Bears were just 13 of 44 from the field, hitting just one of their 12 3-point attempts.

Boardman held a 38-32 rebound edge with Britney Terrell hauling in a team-high seven caroms for Massillon Jackson.

Boardman committed 15 turnovers, but forced their Federal League opponent into 32 miscues which they converted into 21 points.
