Bishop Murry appoints 2 priests to new assignments in the Valley


YOUNGSTOWN — Bishop George V. Murry has appointed two priests to new assignments, effective today.

The Rev. G. David Weikart will be pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville and the Rev. Michael Garvey, associate pastor of St. Rose Church in Girard.

Father Weikart was ordained May 31, 2003, after seminary studies at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pa. He served as associate pastor at St. Christine and St. Rose churches.

Father Weikart is chaplain of the Serra Club of Mahoning County, which promotes vocations to the priesthood, and is a member of the Priests Personnel Board.

Father Garvey was ordained May 29, 1971, after completing seminary studies at Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati.

He served as associate pastor at St. Joan of Arc Church in Canton, on the faculty at Ursuline High School in Youngstown, administrative assistant at St. John High School in Ashtabula and administrator at Mother of Sorrows Church in Ashtabula.

In 1987, he became a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, most recently assigned in Pensacola, Fla. He also served as chaplain for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls.
